I thought it was the other way around. The mains generate the spin and thus have a greater chance of breaking so shouldn't the mains be poly?

Not according to Federer. That's the way he likes them. Yes, it is in reverse to a lot of other players, but he likes them that way, so he gets them strung that way.

The gut mains holds up better with a solid cross. If you don't shank the ball and you are switching every 7 & 9 games, what worry does a pro at that level have?
Now for the 4.5 players I string for who use gut mains with a non gut cross, they all get better playable life out of the strings than they can with straight Poly.
