I envy you guys being there. I have spent a few vacations in Caiscais, love that coast and would love to go to Estoril to see the tennis (and play some golf at Oitavos).

To me the European clay court swing up to Roland Garros is the best part of the tennis year. I can hardly wait for it all to get started.

Well you´re sort of right, the coast is amazing, the Open is near the coast, but it´s not in Cascais, the name is just there for promotional issues but you can get to Cascais by train in no time

I think Portugal don't invest in tennis like they do with soccer. I best player was Bernado Mota if I'm not wrong and he was around 90-100 in the rankings. If we have a Figo or a CR in tennis, we'd be a great country to play tennis....

As far as Gastão Elias, he's a talented young player.. Michelle Brito has a great future, but Portuguese people belives that she'll reached nr 1 spot and IMO she has to get older and them we will se....

It was not Mota, it was Nuno Marques at 87th place, then Cunha e Silva, 108th best.

Now for some photos of......Maria Kirilenko!

Friend, it is not all in investing. much is in popularity. See Serbia never invested in tennis but so it happened ( luckily ) that Djokovic, Tipsarevic, Ivanovic and Jankovic and Zimonjic in doubles just rose in about the same time and there you go. It is a very popular sport here and now ( I am so happy b/c I watch and play for 2 decades ) and it will surely have such an impact to the kids who idolise their heroes.

You can hardly expect that after the tradition Portugal has with footbal and after all the Rui Costa's, Eusebio's, Cr. Ronaldos's, Nani's and Euro champs semis and finals - hardly likely that tennis will be the first thing on kids minds. You got to understand it.

It's not that it's not popular because IT IS. The problem with tennis actually here is much with investing... there are barely support from the government if AT ALL.

Take ATP Estoril for example. João Lagos the sponsor for the tournament, has been asking for a fixed location for about 10 years, that the size of the torunament is no longer available to this location (for information that Central court has to be built every year from scratch because it's standing in a normal tennis court, those stands 2 months ago weren't there. He's been asking for a new home base for 10 years now and there's still no decision in it...no investment... tennis here is managed by private clubs pretty much...most kids play 2 times/week at most, and the ones taking it seriously are paying serious amounts of money just for classes at an average club... There are no public courts for people to play...etc etc.... the thing is tennis will only get money once it succeeds and has results before that I don't think so...

You can take the case with the National Team of Rugby for Portugal for example. They never had sponsors, they are amateurs (all of them have their own professions, doctors, lawyers, etc that managed to practice twice a week) They managed to go to a PROFESSIONAL WORLD CUP. Now Rugby is getting attention to the eyes of the government, illustrous people stating that there should be funds to invest in Rugby bla bla bla...

Soccer takes pretty much all the money and believe me when I say in Portugal soccer is way behind from other sports in terms of success. We never reached anything in soccer, yes we play good football, we have a great team but that's only true from the late 8 years before that we had only reached 2 world cups and 2 european championships, we do play good football but it's a team that chokes and crucial times in my opinion.

Kids to get better have to compete...there's no competetion here in Portugal. Not many tournaments, and for someone that needs to grow their potential in tennis going abroad gets quite expensive. Take the Spanish success for example, of how they managed to get so much success. They created a league within their boarders highly competitive, there are ITF/ATP tennis torunaments pretty much every week in Spain and that gives the kids the opportunity to compete and grow their potential not too far away...

Like some spanish dude said once "I can't make omolets without eggs"

^^ dont stress about this. What if I told you we dont have ANY courts which can hold a tourney here in serbia ? We are a basketball nation and the thing is the last Davis Cup clash with Aussies was held in Limes - basketball venue with around 20 thousand spectators but the courts were clay and very very bad. Hewitt complained like every day three times.

As for the future venues, thats another story. You need a Djokovic. See the guy is building a 17 courts venue in one of the major cities here and the state is funding a 15 court venue in downtown Belgrade - all because of the recent succes in tennis. Trust me , we are former multiple world champs, multiple olympic champs and multiple european champs in basketball so it was the same here. Until few families funded their kids and they turned out to be top notch players.

So I know the situation in a small country obsessed with other sports, take my word for it. I told you what you need, one of you locals to brake thru and make it to the top.

I was not stressing... just trying to explain my point of view. I was not trying to be harsh at all... But as you state, in the past you were champions, etc...

Football here takes all the money what success did we have so far ? If you don't take into account the late 8 years that we went into a Euro Semi Final, a Euro Final and a World Cup 4th place, that aside, nothing at all... And we could look into other sports that are way more successful Judo (european champions, world champions), Body Board we have some of the best out there, whenever they compete in a world tour stage they either win or get reallly good results, but they can't compete the tour full time due to the lack of money no sponsors etc...these are successful the results are there and yet no money...

I agree we need a Djoko or something maybe with Michelle things can be different if she manages to go up to the top which I believe she will in time...

Well, I have read the latest posts of SalvadorVeiga and daddy, and I have to agree with SalvadorVeiga although daddy has a point.
As I talked with Hugo here from the forum, the truth is that Portugal lives on football and that's it. As daddy said we need a Djokovic, but the truth is that it's a bit complicated to get one. There is no help or incentives from the government or anything like that. But...with some real passion we could evolve...but the truth is that tennis is quite a forgotten sport here, mostly because that the spectators don't even like tennis...they just watch because it's "chic" and is seen as being only for rich people. With this said...how can it be successful when not even that the people that go see it, really like it? As Hugo told me, some even read on EO.
And to change mentalities is quite difficult...even more without some really good player(s).
As a portuguese, one of my biggest disgust is that tennis is almost invisible in Portugal.
Is quite ironic that being near Spain and we can't learn something from them...
