View Full Version : One Last Time !!!

I'm going to order four demos (probably Sunday morning) and I vow to make these the last four demos I try this year!!!
In my last poll, you convinced me that the Volkl Tour 10 Midplus should be one of those four. In looking at the racquets in consideration for my last demo session of the year, I decided that the Diablo mid shouldn't be one of them. I'm looking to go to a lighter feeling racquet from my POG mid and with a swingweight of 331, I don't feel that this is one of the racquet I should try.
I know I'm going to demo: Wilson ROK, Volkl Tour 10 Midplus, and Prince Diable Midplus. That leaves a spot for one more.
So out of the 3 racquets above, please vote for the one that IN YOUR OPINION, will give a 4.5 player solid groundstrokes with pinpoint control AND maneuverability, touch, and feel at the net?
Thanks for all your help and opinions over the past several weeks.

You're going to vow that these are the last four demos of the year? You might as well be vowing to hold your breath until tax day.
There is no racket that can give you qualities that you don't possess. When Prince comes out with the Viagra model, then you should buy. Until then, it's just a racket, Benjamin. After the countless demos (well OK, you can count them; how about after the countless posts on demos? I know you can't count them), you can't find anything better than what you play with now. I have found my ideal racket. To continually search for something that doesn't exist borders on O/C. Lessons would be cheaper than a psychiatrist.
If there were such a frame, I'd be looking for that frame which would make me play like I was 25 again. :!:
But, in the interest of fair play, I'm going to suggest (and agree with Deuce) that you order an Ergonom. It won't make you play any better, but it will amaze your friends and neighbors. 8) You'll be the envy of everyone on court. Where'd Ben get that fantastic looking racket? Where can I get one? Hey, that guy is cool, maybe he'll let me hang out with him. All your kids at school will start calling you Mr. B, or Fonz because they'll think you're the coolest thing on the block. Young players in the area will worship you. You can buy a leather warmup to go with your new racket and start your own gang. And, you should probably consider a new haircut, the Pompadoor is not that far out of style. Maybe a ducktail?
And, to answer your last post, one or two lessons would be better than no lessons.
Finally, grasshopper, you may not leave the temple until you can grasp this idea. Ok now, say it with me....It ain't the racket, it ain't the racket, it ain't the racket, it ain't the racket, it ain't the racket, it ain't the racket Sorry about the use of ain't, Benjamin, I know you're a teachaer.

Make it 5 more.
Demo the VOLKL Tour 8 S.E. 4 3/8 grip. Make sure it's the S.E.
I wasn't even looking for a racket but ended up buying it within 2 weeks. It's light, stable, and has "pop".
You have gone through "all most" as many rackets as me. I have read your posts. Like Rabbit says: "It's not the racket " but this one sure helps me. I too have gone the full route. Extended Pure Drive to Pro Staff 85. Mostly 4.5 doubles.

I tried the Prince Viagra, I found it to be too stiff, gave me, uh, tennis elbow, yeah that's it. My wife also complained that I was spending too much time, uh, pounding the ball.
Benjamin, one word 'Estusa'...

Ben, it seems that many of these posters are familiar with you. But I don't remember what you are trying to get out of the racquet. Could you detail your skill level and playing style. I really would not suggest the Prestige line unless you were at least a big hitting 4.0 player. This line is for increasing control of aggressive players.

if i were you and in the states, i would just keep demoing all the racquets that ever interest me
john, ben seems to say he's a 4.5 who wants to improve his net game

I frequently visit these boards, and the funny thing is I always look for your posts in the racquet section because you always seem to be in a never ending quest for the "best racquet". The racquet is only a small part of the equation, yes it should be an extension of your arm...but you hand any good tennis player any kind of racquet and i guarantee they will hit the ball very similar.
I've noticed your trying to develop an all court game, well any racquet will volley well if you practice at it.
Good luck with your search, but i bet if your last few orders of demo's had instead landed in the pocket of your local pro....you might be content with those POG's and your game more so

Haven't done the math yet, but maybe a year-round demo program is cheaper than actually committing to (and buying!) a pair of tennis racquets. Just a thought.

I just took a second mortgage on the house that you won't keep that vow. Let me know ASAP when you break it so i can collect. I can then use the money I win to buy a new racket.
I would add the PS 6.0 (85) as the 4th demo. May find it closer to your liking than your POG. And of course, I will be surfing this board to read your review when you finish this wave of demos. By the way, mine is just good natured kidding. Demo all you want. Harmless habit.

try the diablo mid. also estusas, and 6.0 95

If it's not evident, I'm just ribbing as well.
Brent - That was great.

baseliner....when you lose your bet on January 1st, 2005....don't blame me.....I told ya so! I own a PS 6.0 (85) and tried it this past Saturday...not as good of feel from the baseline and no better at the net than my POG mid.
bfonz7....as shown by my demoing the ROK, the racquet can make a huge difference at net - a lot more manuverable than my POG mid, fabulous touch compared to my POG, and both of these lead to me having confidence at the net.
tbj....I'm a 4.5 baseliner who typically uses spin, patience, control, and drop shots to beat my opponents. I'm looking for a racquet that will give me more confidence and touch at the net.
Rabbit...I believe it is 103 posts on demos!!!

Try the Pro Kennex Core 1# 6, you will not be disapointed.

With that information, I would give the LM Prestige a try, I would go with the poll results for the MP. I have tried both, and would not use the mid unless I was a 5.5 or higher in power and control. Even though you are looking for better play at the net, I would not give up on the game that got you to 4.5. THerefore, I would demo it with some added weight. It is 8 pts hl, which while may help some with reaction at the net, will hurt your touch and control baseline core of your game. You know. Just stay back. Or play alot of doubles. When the other 4.5 players realize that you are not comfortable at the net they will work you like a dog. However, after a year of that, it will not matter which racquet you pick, you will be a better net player. Just remember, never close your eyes or you will get hit in the eye.

Your assessment of the 6.0 85 is proof that you shouldn't rely on what others like. I personally think the PS 6.0 85 has much better feel and is the best volleying racquet ever. The feel, balance, beam thickness, control and maneuverability are superior to the POG. Of course, this is all subjective. I found the POG cumbersome (maybe it was the roundish beam...)

Hey Benjamin, what if you decided to go with the vote and demo a Head LM Prestige Midplus and then really, really liked it and then wondered to yourself..."I wonder if the Mid would be just that little bit better....I think I'd better have a hit with that also....just to be sure....yes...just a little more control would be nice...."
Go Demo man Go...

To be honest gentlemen...I just ordered the four demos: Diablo MP, Tour 10 MP, ROK, and Wilson Tour 95.
Basically I went with the Tour 95 for two reasons: 1)I'm hoping (by looking at the specs) that it will behave like a little heavier Tour 9 (which was recently discontinued) and 2)the i.prestige got a less that stellar review (except in control) - I know that they didn't review the midplus 27", but from looking at the other ratings it seems as though the Tour 95 might be a little better choice for the net game.
BUT, ONE OF THE FOUR WON'T BE IN UNTIL APRIL 9TH SO THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF TIME FOR ME TO CHANGE MY MIND :D - ESPECIALLY IF TW GETS A GREAT REVIEW UP FOR THE LM PRESTIGE BEFORE THAT TIME
Thanks for all your help.

Don't stop demoing!! There is much pleasure in the journey.
Speaking for myself, it gives me great pleasure to read your posts...kind of like an armchair travelogue for me.
I can't believe you passed on the PBB if you're interested in a stick to improve your net game while still preserving your reliance on spin! Anyway ... I can hardly advise the Demo King -- I've only demoed around 30 racquets myself, most of them last year -- but I recommend pairing racquets that are as similar as reasonable and then progressing, rather than testing radically different sticks against one another, especially of one only has 6-7 days to test four racquets. Regardless, Benjamin, I look forward to your reports. My only other suggestion: Rather than ask so many questions, provide a few answers, eh? T'is better to give than to receive ... (especially if you have awesome kick on your second!)

ACTUALLY GUYS, I JUST SENT AN E-MAIL TO TW ASKING IF THEY WILL GET RID OF THE TOUR 95 AND PUT THE LM PRESTIGE MIDPLUS IN ITS PLACE.
SINCE THE LM PRESTIGE RECEIVED MORE VOTES IN THIS POLL, I'M GOING TO GO WITH IT SO THAT IF IT IS NOT THE HOLY GRAIL I'LL HAVE SOMEONE TO BLAME :D
I ALSO CHANGED IT SO I'LL HAVE ANOTHER 18X20 RACQUET TO COMPARE ALONG SIDE THE ROK.
I'M PRETTY STOKED ABOUT THESE DEMOS DUDE. LIKE TOTALLY!!! IT COULD TURN OUT THAT THEY ARE ALL THE TYPE OF RACQUET I'M LOOKING FOR...MAKING THIS A VERY TOUGH DECISION.
I CAN'T WAIT (I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO THOUGH, ONE OF THEM ISN'T GOING TO BE IN UNTIL THE SECOND WEEK IN APRIL...IF I'M LUCKY) TO PUT THESE RACQUETS THROUGH ALL THE STROKES.
THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S HELP---THESE ARE FOUR RACQUET I'M TRULY LOOKING FORWARD TO PUTTING THROUGH THEIR PACES.
SOMETIMES WHEN I ORDER DEMOS, I ALREADY HAVE MY MIND MADE UP THAT ONE OF THEM ISN'T WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR BUT ORDER IT JUST SO I'LL HAVE A 4TH. ALL OF THESE SEEM LIKE THEY "COULD" BE THE ONE.
LOOK FOR A FULL REVIEW/COMPARISON IN A MONTH!!!

I cannot believe u passed up the PBB!!! I finally got to hit with it today and it was great. Kicker..... oooo so sweeeet..... S&V baby. Also the PS 6.0 95 was awesome too. I dont kno which racket i want to get. I think you should demo one of these instead of the LM prestige, I mean look at the swingweight on that thing.... I don't kno i guess its too late now. You can alwayz demo some more ^_^.
03-26-2004, 04:58 AM
I was basically looking for something lighter than the POG mid so I didn't go with the PBB. I think it's 12.2 ounces. I know the swingweight is lower than the POG mid but it's still a heavier racquet. I don't think the swingweight of the MIDPLUS (the one I ordered) is that bad. I know the mid is at 340, not sure of the midplus but I think it's lower than the 328 on my POG mid.
03-26-2004, 01:41 PM
^^^ Gah my eyes!!!
The lm prestige mp swingweight did seem quite low after demoing it from TW last week. One redeeming quality from that was that my volley reaction time was quicker with it than my normal racquets (weighted T10 MP, Rd-7, iPrestige).
