I'm a 4.5 high school #1 and I played a weak 4.0 pusher and lost in two sets. He hit all his balls short and didn't put any pace on them and it made it impossible to created any pace. What am you supposed to do in this situation????

hit approach shots on the short balls and come to net.

1. A 4.5 will never lose to a 4.0

2. If you think that you can't put pace on a short, paceless ball, you are a 3.5 or lower.

4.5 you say? Antipate those short balls and volley those suckers away. I hope you can volley those away lol. Fear of overheads,,,, then practice those : )

slice on the ball. on those junker shots hit it hard but with a ton of topspin. push yourself through or variety with some lobs, hit some hard, move them around so many options

so, you are a 4.5 player without a 4.5 midcourt game. You've got a lot of work to do to fill that gap because one criteria for moving to 4.5 in my opinion is easily putting away 4.0 pushers.

You need to reevaluate your game if you think you are a 4.5, yet lost to a 4.0 pusher. It's possible you could have a 4.5 baseline game, but losing to a pusher (in two sets, at that; it isn't like he outlasted you) shows that you either lack patience, a net game, or control.

Lol, 4.5 losing to 4.0... Anyway, what I do to beat pushers is get them to net. Most pushers I've played are really bad at netplay, so I just hit a drop from which they can't a winner off of, then pass/lob them. I do either that or I keep lobbing it until a short ball comes...it's not too hard. Just remember to be patient. I lost sooo many games to pushers just by attempting to hit strong shots every ball.

I had the same problem, but apparently i won him 6-4 6-2 what did i do? i had to swing faster and hit more spin to create the pace i want if not ill just start volleying

I was having a bad day and I can get to the net but the guy got every ball, pretty much, no matter what I did. I usually play with the College and JC team so yea I am a 4.5, IDK, I was playing like **** I guess. It was horrible.

Yea, that's what happened. I don't hit extreme spin so my balls were going long all the time, but he is an excellent net player and quick.

No, I play with 4.5's and 5.0's and can beat them as much as they beat me.

In that case, the only thing you can do is be patient, hit deep balls and wait for short balls. You have to make sure you capitalize on those short balls he gives you since that would be the only way you would be able to get points off of him.

LOL you can "beat" 4.5's, 5.0's, and hang with college players, yet you can't beat a 4.0 PUSHER.

I get it now, you're just trolling, hard to find sarcasm in your post earlier.

If you're losing to a pusher, you're not a 4.5, and if you're beating these "4.5 and 5.0 players as much as they beat you", they're not 4.5 or 5.0 players, either.

a "4.5" should know how to beat one already.

LeftySpin
04-18-2008, 06:41 AM
really the only way to beat a pusher is to move up to the net. people that push are usually people that dont have an "ace" shot which means that if your going to the net the only thing you need to worry about is being lobbed. i dont see this as a problem with this pusher tho, when you move to the net im sure he will feel more pressured. he will get the occasional lucky shot that passes you but overall moving to the net in the better idea

You have no one to blame but yourself. We all lost to people we should beat every now and then. If all of his shots landed short, then it is definitely a fault of yours that you didn't crush them...

This sounds hostile, but it's the truth. The reason you lost was not external (his short shots with no pace), but internal (you should've crushed those).

A 4.5 and you couldn't put away short balls with no pace? That's self-ranking to the max...

Doesn't sound like a pusher to me.

If you were hitting balls long "all the time", you're not a 4.5. Period.

I hate to break it to you but I have had several instances of playing people who rated themselves higher than they should be, and beat them comfortably. It could be the same case with you.

1) played a guy last year who rated himself 4.5, I rated myself as a 4.5 at that time. I muscled my way to a 6-1 victory and ended up just toying around with him. We still play each other regularly and he has yet to take a set off me in like 15+ matches.

2) played a ladder match against a 4.5 player, beat him 6-1,6-2. He immediately changed his rating to 4.0 on the ladder website. I would rate him a 4.0 at best.

3) played a 4.0 pusher a few weeks back, beat him 6-4,6-0. (you should be able to do the same)

I was having a bad day and not all my balls were going long. The thing that he did was when I would drop shot he would come to the net but he was quick as **** and I passed him multiple times but he was very consistant at placing balls and I just played horribly. THis is more of a pissed off venting post than anything else.

And the 4.5 thing, yes I am a 4.5. I play with people that play in 4.5 tournaments and get to the semis and finals and sometimes win quite consistantly.

I need thinner string. 16g sucks.

Yea dude, if he had a net game and had good placement, then he's obviously not a pusher. And pusher's never get past 3.5, they plateau there because their game doesn't fit the criteria of being a 4.0 player. And don't be so quick to judge yourself as 4.5 my friend.

Don't get cocky from sitting behind flatscreen

EDIT: The posters are right though, maybe the guy was a really good S&V player with no strokes... Stepanek anyone?
That aside, being able to kill pushers is like a rite of passage in tennis. Search up "pusher" on TTW, there's actually an official thread; everyone on the boards has gone through this at one point or another. Just gotta work on it ;D

Once again, a 4.5 will never lose to a 4.0 anything. A true 4.5 is very consistent and has several weapons that he/she uses to win matches. If you are playing in 4.5 tourneys and getting past the first round you must be playing in the retard division. Come play me and I'll show you what a 4.5 is like.
