It's a great blog, where did you get the pics of Venus?

I got Venus' pics from the all over the internet. Were there some in particular that you want me to send you a link for?

There were are few from the EleVen launching last November/December that I never saw or don't have, and that link would be fine if you have a chance.

What you can also do is click on the button below the slideshow on my blog called "View All Images." This will pop up and show you all of the pictures on the slideshow, which you can click on, and then right click on it to save it on your computer, etc.

Does anyone else have any opinions as to what could be added to make the blog better?

So... You have permission from the owners to post their material (photos, videos, etc.) on your blog?

stevie10
04-20-2008, 07:55 AM
Is there a photo of yours that you would like taken off?

cghipp

LOL, I'll take that as a "no."

All of the pictures are from the internet. Are they not available for use of the general public?

Would it help to put a disclaimer on the blog, stating that pictures can be removed if anyone doesn't wanted them being used?

It looks great! Nice work. There is no need to put a disclaimer about photos. If you want you can put a discalimer that it's unoffical and not related to the Williams sisters. But certainly not for photos.

The only thing I would recommend is not using photos which actually have a signature or logo on it, like Getty Images for instance.

The answer is no - things on the internet aren't free for your use just because you can copy them onto your site. You really should do at least the bare minimum of research on the subject before you find yourself getting sued. Start with "intellectual property rights." "Laurie" doesn't have a clue what she's talking about.

It makes me laugh that so many people think I'm a woman - incredible.

Anyway enough of that, Steve is not going to get sued by anyone - you are just scare mongoring. The guy has nothing to worry about other than people like you who are clearly afraid of their own shadow.

By the way Steve10, one thing you can do - the photos you use, you can acknowledge the source of the photos, or the source of articles etc. That's usually sufficient. I've been running a website for a Tennis player since November 2006 so I'm not an expert on all matters like this but have some idea of how it works.

I wouldn't worry with cghipp - he sounds like a scaredy cat.

stevie10
04-20-2008, 02:13 PM
Thanks for all your help and support Laurie. Basically, all of the images, except for those from the slideshow, are all from either tennis.com or the WTA tour website - I didn't think that would be a problem.

Good stuff Steve, I agree no problem there.

What is legal and what you can get away with are two different things.

What is the big deal with his pictures? You're taking this a little too seriously.

I would also like to point out that on blogspot, when you would like to add a photo, you can either upload one from your computer, or you can add one from the internet. There is a specific place to put the URL address for a picture, which blogspot will upload.

If using pictures from the internet is not allowed, why is there this choice? And how could anyone make a fan-based blog if they couldn't use any pictures off the internet?

Stop stressing yourself out, and keep up the work on your blog. Just take the advice that Laurie gave you which was spot on and do your thing. I look forward to reading more in the future, and seing a lot more pictures.

I am telling you what is legal. Laurie is telling you what you may be able to get away with, though it is illegal. Take your pick. Here's a link with some info:

Like I said, the man (I assume he's a man) is a scaredy cat. I have experience on running websites - he has nothing to back up his comments - does he perform projects like this? Or maybe he learnt this in college and is taking it all too literally.

Unless he has something good to back up his statements he's a timewaster and getting Steve worried for absolutely no reason.

I don't think Stevie10 in infringing on anyone's privacy whatsoever. Plus he isn't profiting from this blog in any way shape or form, it's for information and entertainment to who wants to read it.

stevie10
04-20-2008, 03:03 PM
cghipp, so are you saying that if I contact the websites that I get pictures from and ask for their permission to use them on my blog, everything will be okay?

stevie10
04-20-2008, 03:09 PM
And another question, are we only talking about the pictures in my posts, or does this include the pictures in my slideshow?

laurie
04-20-2008, 03:14 PM
Steve10, It's the last thing I will say on this - but you really really should not worry about cghipp, again he's a scaremonger, someone who's probably afraid to do any type of project himself - it's much easier to talk - much harder to get down to business and do, but life is much more satisfying when you actually produce something of quality which you can be proud of and other people can appreciate.

For instance, when I first started puuting together my website in 2006, these were questions I also addreessed so I have experience in dealing with these sorts of issues plus I was collaborating with an agent.

If you want to talk about it more, send me a personal message.

cghipp
04-20-2008, 03:18 PM
Steve - Yes, that's what I'm saying. That includes any material you took from another web site.

stevie10
04-20-2008, 03:20 PM
Once again, thanks a lot for all of your help.

The only problem is, I'm starting to think cghipp is right. For example, on the WTA Tour Website, it says:

No Tennis Content from the Site may be reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted, reproduced, distributed, copied, publicly displayed or otherwise used except as provided in these Terms of Use without the written permission of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

This really scares me.

I might just have to delete all my pictures. Does this include the slideshow?

You probably regret coming on here now. The only person who will be satisfied from your actions is cghipp - think about that before you take any drastic actions, there are many sources to get photos.

For instance, you can use these photos here where they say who too k the photos and you can quote the source of the photos, they are happy with this arrangement. You are not profiteering from the images.

I'm off to bed - goodnight.

stevie10
04-20-2008, 04:51 PM
Yes, I kinda regret coming on here, but at least if I'm doing something wrong I now know about it.

Thanks for the idea, although according to cghipp's links that he sent me, just citing the source isn't good enough either.

I just don't know who to believe. Both of you are convincing and seem confident that you are right.

stevie10
04-21-2008, 01:44 PM
Does anyone else know anything about this issue?

stevie10
04-21-2008, 09:17 PM
Ok cghipp, I have deleted all pictures from my blog. Do you know of any websites that individuals are free to use pictures from without infringing on copyrights?

stevie10
04-21-2008, 09:23 PM
Also, what if I save images from the internet to my computer and then upload them my blog. Is this the same as using them directly from the web and is this legally allowed?

I hope you haven't done that... the 5-0's got internet monitoring devices
to track breaches in the law like this. Expect a knock on your front door
in the next week or so when dispatch sends someone out to cuff you.

cghipp
04-22-2008, 08:09 AM
No, you have the same problem. If you do a Google search for "free photos" you'll find several sites that offer free images. What I would do is contact some people who have posted their own photos on their own blogs or on online message boards (for example, people who go to tournaments and take pictures) if you could post their photos on your blog, with a credit and maybe a link to their web site. You could share resources with other fan blogs, with reciprocal links, and that would help both of you. Write some original material about your subject that's up to date and relevant, post regularly with your comments, and make sure your meta data (keywords and such) are properly filled out. Post on other, related blogs that allow comments, and include your own blog address in your comment. As your blog grows in popularity, you'll find more people/sources willing to share resources with you. And your blog will be much more original and interesting than if you just swiped photos from a bunch of professional sites and re-posted them.

Nice web site. Attribution would be a nice touch, and if anyone is offended or upset that you used their photos (unlikely) they would be more likely to write you a nice letter, rather than an ugly one.

Anyone who has produced anything creative, like your web site, understands that respect for another artist's work is paramount. Sometimes, but not always, that translates into money. :)
