Thanks for posting. Federer has a potential Nalbo quarterfinal meeting and a Djokovic semi...could be interesting.

A few interesting first rounders...

Querrey-Moya: Only interesting for the simple fact that there will be probably about 5 total backhands struck the entire match.

Safin-Malisse: Two paradoxical talents going at it. In the end, it'll come down to who is the bigger mental midget or who runs out of racquets...but a lot of shotmaking though, wouldnt mind seeing it.

Kuerten has a shot against Ljubicic I guess. Would be great to see him go through a round.

Seems like a pretty straightforward draw for Fed till the semi-final where he could meet Djokovic. Hope he can get out of his rut.

Gugas chronic hip problem means he cannot finish a match without experiencing pain and discomfort in hes hip/leg region. I am rooting for him, he is a legend but he has to go for the winners and hope the margins are good.

Hewitt will skip a few clay court tournaments until Rome. He is hoping to heal a left hip tendon problem he experienced in Miami.

I think Murray and Gasquet are easier than for example Ferrer and Nalbandian, especially on this surface. So djoko can't complain.

Gasquet if healthy is a tougher customer on clay than Murray.
Not sure if Murray can even beat Lopez in fact;I doubt it.

Blake has never played Monte Carlo in his career while Roddick played there years ago I believe.
boy querrey will get trounced by Moya but hey it's nice that he is trying to play on clay;same with Ginepri playing in Valencia.

Arguably Nadal has a very tough draw, though he is awesome on clay. Having Ancic in 2nd round is not easy, then Ferrero/Nieminen and then Ferrer most probably, that is tough qarter draw.

If seeds hold, he has to get by Nalbandian first, and Nalbandian has always been troublesome for Federer. Fed could have to go through Nalbandian, Djokovic and Nadal to win. This could be a very good test to see where he is at headed into the French.

Soderling is not for underestimating but agree he should have won more convincingly on clay at home.

Hopefully it's more competitive than previous encounters from last year. They were nothing short of straight beatdowns by Djokovic.

Well Joker seems to like Murrays defensive game, it allowes him to build his point well and he does not come to the net that often to be passed. Lets see if Murray can alter his game as he said when he beat Roger. I am curious to see if he can add a touch of attacking style to match Djokovic, otherwise he will be up against it.

I like Nalbandian a lot, but I see federer and Djokovic as the two favourites to reach it. Please explain why you disagree, or are you just trying to annoy Djoko's and Fed's fans?

...... Or he could be a Nalbandian fan maybe?? If you watch tennis then you'd know that Federer always has a hard time with Nalbandian. Add to that federer is'nt playin up to his standards, I'd say Nalbandian has a real good shot. Heck, Fed's is losing sets to players ranked below 100.

Just because YOU see fed an Djokovic as the two favorites doesn't mean everyone else does...lol

Well yes this is pretty much the truth. They'll show up latter for one or couple of the masters, lose early in RG and get some rest prior the beg of 'real' season. Same as if they did not show up. And yet someone else was implying here that Wimbledon slowed the grass down to avoid a strike of dirtballers, when I pointed out that many hc/grass specialist do not give a damn about clay ( because they have no chance ) I was dissmised. Thanks sir ! ;)

Nice to see Ancic in the draw, despite the fact that he'll get destroyed by Nadal if he wins his opener.

It's sad to see Querrey as the only American in the draw. If you're a professional athlete, why wouldn't you want to go to Monte Carlo to play tennis? It's beautiful there.

Well not really. Nica is much more beautifull, in MC you can not do anything much. Its really one of those things, like the fancy restaurants. You go there and pay a ton for nothing much and then go buy a burger afterwords to eat something.

Btw - I can post pics from few greek villages which would take your breath away, pics dont really tell you whats it like.

Ps - about the $$ - I can afford it but I can really hit a slot club here in Belgrade also. Unles seeing a million dollars cars and houses and yachts does it for ya. Id rather do somethign that sightseeing or if Im going to do it Ill hit Athens.

Well there are other places in that area that I'd rather be, Nice included.

BUT, if you compare Monte Carlo to the other prestigious ATP tournaments, it's at the top of the list in terms of environmental beauty. The Medterranean is still the Mediterranean.

And Andy Roddick can afford the amenities the city has to offer.

I have just one comment. A great city to go to and see the things it has to offer ONCE. Nothing much to do there, day or night. You can go to some restaurants or clubs and thats about it. I guess the closed community thing and low taxes suit the rich & famous and that is why its so popular.

Nice, that is another story. Great beach, nice and frendly people, down to earth. Great night clubs and all that just 5 miles from Monte Carlo. And not to talk about the prices but you can relax in Nice to put it that way.

Is there a doubles equivalent to the entry ranking system that seeds singles players? Can't find it anywhere. If it doesn't exist, why are the Bryans seeded first, and Erlich/Ram second?

It will be last weeks Davis Cup all over again for the Bryans. To get to the quarterfinals, they need to get past TWO French teams. Either Benneteau/Mahut or Mathieu/Santoro in the second round (they have a bye in the first round), and most likely Clement/Llodra in the third round. Almost makes me want to hop on an airplane to see some good dubs. To bad I have to work.

Race in doubles is calculated for teams. Rankings are calculated for individual players so at the atp site / rankings you can find that these are currect top 10 players in doubles :

1st Bryan , B. 5325
1st Bryan , M. 5325
3rd Knowles , M. 4500
4th Nestor , D. 4260
5th Vizner , P. 3995
6th Erlich , J. 3510
6th Ram , A. 3510
8th Knowle , J. 3445
9th Aspelin , S. 3445
10th Zimonjic , N. 3425

I think they do this because if the players chnge partners, they still know how to calculate their mutual points and where to seed them.

So, if I understand you correctly, they take the individual players rankings, add them together, and seed based on that? That works.

I am not the most informed guy about doubles, but they do keep doubles rankings only for single players as you saw, not for teams. I guess they have a way to calculate if for example Llodra plays this tourney with Clement and the next one with Bennetau - they surely have a way of calculating how good will they be based on their separate ( single ) rankings in doubles list and make the seedings according to that.

...they do keep doubles rankings only for single players as you saw, not for teams. I guess they have a way to calculate...

Haven't the slightest how the seed. Just ran the numbers and this is what I came up with.

Using the "ATP Individual Doubles Rankings For 4/14/08" from http://************.com/rankings/2008/db041408.txt

The seeded players, their ranking points, and combined total

seeded 1, Bryan/Bryan 5325/5325 = 10650 (1)
seeded 2, Erlich/Ram 3510/3510 = 7021 (4)
seeded 3, Nestor/Zimonjic 4260/3425 = 7685 (2)
seeded 4, Bhupathi/Knowles 3050/4500 = 7550 (3)
seeded 5, Aspelin/Knowle 3445/3445 = 6890 (5)
seeded 6, Dlouhy/Vizner 2750/3995 = 6745 (6)
seeded 7, Clement/Llodra 3180/3125 = 6305 (7)
seeded 8, Bjorkman/Ullyett 1915/2625 = 4540 ( 8 )

next Hanley/Paes 2685/1845 = 4530

So...except for Erlich/Ram, seems to hold where their combined ranking points determine their seed position. Perhaps Erlich and Ram have been "rewarded" for their performance/results for this current season, (Aus Open and PLO). They are the top ranked "team" this year, so far. But then, the third seeded Nestor/Zimonjic are only the seventh ranked team this year. Who know? Nobody cares about doubles anyway, right?

I've been to both many times, Nice has more to do but is dirtier and has much more dog poop on the ground than Monte Carlo. "Down to earth" is an unusual term, I would use the term "euro trash" :) (joking!)

For vacationers though, I would recommend staying in Nice, since there is more to do, and it is much more affordable (wide range of options), and then taking day trips to Cannes, Monte Carlo and the perfume place (Grasse?).

US players should get second homes in Europe, and enjoy the clay season more -- if it really is about living out of a suitcase. More US players in Europe would help tennis tourism, and maybe would result in some more matches on TV in the US.
