View Full Version : How does Llodra compare to Sampras?

I think he is almost a left-handed Sampras.
Serve: Sampras bigger more acurate.
Llodra left-handed spin.

Movement: both stealth and quick.

Volley: Llodra better especially in the touch department

Forehand: Both good at the running forehand but of course Sampras' running forehand was legendary.

Backhand: Both kind of weak. Slices a lot.

I would say Sampras a bit better, probably would win 6 games out of 10.

Llodra may be the better doubles player. For singles, Sampras' serve is much more deadly. Llodra's serve is good but not nearly as consistent.

14 slams to 0 (which will not increase)

Llodra may have been able to win a slam or two in the wood era. His game is too much reliant on finesse and volleys to make a big dent in today's ace and baseline power topspin game. Still, he does well enough, having won two singles titles this year as well as some slam doubles titles in the past.

Not the same talent as Sampras, of course, but come on, the guy can be very fun to watch. It's nice to see some serve and volley tennis in today's game.

Of course you can't compare Sampras - a legend - with Llodra - who will never even be a legend in France.

However, I will agree that Llodra is a very underrated player on fast courts. I have seen him play live and his service games are usually *crisp*.

Watched Llodra and Ferrero in MC this am. Llodra's first serve is too inconsistent, doesn't hit his spots enough and I'm not impressed w/his volleys. He swings too much, wrist not firm. At leat from what I saw this morning. Certainly could improve those areas.

Although it was nice to see a guy serve-and-volley off both serves on clay.

One more difference: Sampras never snuck into Ljubicic's locker naked, to surprise and pull a prank on Ljubicic!

He is not a impressive singles player. About the volleys though - you are judging by one match so I am not going to be harsh. He is the very best volleyer in pro tennis today without any doubt and arguably the best doubles player because of this. Pair him up with a decent doubles player and you'll get a winning team.

I did watch him for years because of my love for serve and volley though, this is how I know.

Best volleyer today? No way. Have seen Llodra several times and not the best volleyer w/o a doubt. Jonas Bjorkman is still the best volleyer in the game with the retirement of Tim Henman. Among singles players at least. Fed is pretty good at the net when he comes forward. Stepanek is good as well.

Pete Sampras would win 6 out of 10 against Michael LLodra? Is this some sort of joke?

Well I did not come up with this one anyways but I did agree with it when I heard it. Bjorkman is good no doubt about it, though personally Id rate him below Llodra right now. Henman was a great volleyer but he is retired and he really had no game to make use of his volleys.

Wow, that's a bold statement to make. Sampras is a bit better than Llodra? I don't know man, this is LLODRA we're talking about. You've got serious balls saying that this dude Sampras?? was a bit better than Llodra.

6-4 sets not unthinkable.
But the joke was to describe movement as similar. Sampras was regarded by his peers as a freakish athlete and a great mover. Llodra is a doubles specialist because of mediocre lateral movement.

Serve: Sampras bigger, more accurate, AND more consistent.
Llodra left-handed spin. That's about it...

Movement: Sampras, legendary movement. Llodra, average pros movement.

Volley: Llodra a little better.

Forehand:Llodra's running forehand is questionable, but of course Sampras' running forehand was legendary.

Backhand: Sampras a little better.

I would say Sampras is a LOT better, probably would win 9 games out of 10

There, makes more sense now.

I need to hear this story.

Jms pretty much summed up the whole prank.

I remembered Ljubicic commented afterwards that Llodra is very, very flexible, to fit himself naked inside a locker. It was pretty funny :)

How can you compare these two?

Sampras leads 2-0, and both matches were played in 2000, in the verge of Pete's retirement.

Someobody has been smoking too much wacky tabacki.

career high of #37. 86 - 114 singles record. Yeh, he's pretty close to Sampras- NOT.

To put things into perspective. Llorda would compare very badly to someone like Mark Woodforde in singles. Theyre both Left handed and can volley, but Woodforde is significantly better.

Well I don't know about Llodra, but someone told me my backhand reverse drop volley was better than Sampras and I have absolutely no reason not to believe it!!

A lot of these guys look so talented, and you don't see why they're any worse than the greats of the past. You think it must all be in their heads, because their strokes are so good. Then you see them play against a great, and suddenly you realize how much they suck.

They're the same. Just like Laver and Mardy Fish.

Honestly. ;)
