View Full Version : Dead balls damage tension?

I played today with dead balls and it felt like each time the ball was struck, my strings were taking a massive blow.

Do dead balls degrade tension faster?

Newer balls should do more damage, since they're heavier and have a stiffer surface. Dead balls are known to make a loud popping sound when struck. They also have less pressure, so they'll compress easier on your string bed.

Alright thanks, the popping noise makes it sound like it does more damage. However, hearing this gives me a sigh of relief. :D

They have a side effect though with people trying to hit them harder. This can have adverse effects on string life. Not so much the tension. If your strings are losing abnormal tension from overhitting a dead ball or any ball, you probably need a better stringing.

that's just silly

You can over hit soft balls to regain lost distance, but they still aren't as heavy/stiff as newer balls.
