Sounds like he and my high school coach from 25 years ago could be the same person! Obviously he doesn't know what he is doing and doesn't want to admit it either. Unfortunately, this happens, and you have to just make the most of it if you want to continue on the team. I had a chance to win the state singles championship and that is why I stayed on the team despite the fact I had no one to practice with and she would not allow me to bring someone to practice who was of my level of ability. Look at the big picture! And.....good luck!

My coach would frequent strip clubs and take money from us playing pool and poker when we did drills during the summer.

Sounds like the typical high school coach who got put into coaching tennis. I will tell you what though, your attitude sucks ass. At least he comes and says stuff to you during your matches, it sounds like he at least cares. If I was your high school coach, by the way I play futures tournaments in the summer so I can play and I have coached high school tennis; I would kick your smart ass out of practice if you kept goofing off. Obviously your game could use some work and maybe some power if your 43 year old 4.0 mom still beats you. So shut up and play and quit blaming your shortcomings in your own game on your coach. You should be respectful and not be such a punk. I was 5th in my state in high school and had a coach who I could beat 6-0 without trying, alot like your coach, but I respected him and grew to love him despite him not knowing a thing about tennis and not being able to help me with mine. He is the best coach I have ever had and I played #3 at a top 10 DII school after high school. To me it sounds like you are just some spoiled brat who needs the sh@t kicked out of him. Players like you are not worth any coaches time. Maybe if you took practice seriously and your so called "waste of time" matches seriously and worked on the defeciencies in your game while playing against him you might grow to respect that your coach actually takes the time to play with you, and improve your pathetic tennis game. Kids like you need an attitude adjustment and to learn that a good tennis game is worked for on your own, not given to you by a great coach and not free without sacrafice. Spend the time you think you are wasting wisely to improve, instead of using to UNDERHAND SERVE when you probably can't hit every type of serve in the spot you want to hit it. Until you can put the ball where you want it without missing and get to the professional level, it sounds to me your are not even close to college level yet, then shut up and use your time wisely instead of b*tching about your coach.

Oh my what a beatdown!
To defend myself the time I was playing him was an example. I am actually silent during practice and put up with him. I am not saying that I am a great player, only that he thinks he knows everything but knows nothing and puts down his players who "undermine" his authority. It is not only me who feels this way, our whole team had a meeting and we almost started a petition to get him replaced however we live in a small community and have a conscience so we didn't. My problem, if not clearly stated before, is how he will not listen to (not complaints but) suggestions for practice variations etc. As I said before I am not a tennis pro but have taken multiple lessons from higher ups and definately do not like it when he says things to my teammates like if you land inside the baseline after jumping on your serve it is a footfault, even if the contact with the baseline is after the ball, or when he gives the wrong definitions for things like offensive lobs. Bottom line is I was just venting, and don't appreciate being attacked, I think of myself as a well-respected and honorable person, not a little punk jerk!
Damn, JM, after that one, may I have your autograph? Not so keen on the "coach love" though...

Phil,
No I have no patience with kids who complain about their high school coaches and especially when they have disrespect for them. One rarely has a good high school coach who knows his/her stuff, most of them are just doing it for the extra money or are forced to do it by their school. I just speak my mind, no bs, to people.

MC,
the thing with alot of these coaches, is that they are the coach, you are the kid, and they do not want to admit that a kid's suggestion about practice might be a good idea. And the less they know about something the more they feel they have to stress authority. My coach did it, I love him now. Respect the guy, play hard against him, and be thankful that your coach takes time to play and say things to you and communicate during matches with you. That is already more than most of the coaches do. It sounds like to me you expect a high school coach to be like a club pro and that is a rarity. If you work hard for him and talk to him and be respectful of him whether he is right or wrong then you may end up liking him as I did. And you just may develop into a player someday. And if you have any thoughts of playing after high school, remember this, the college coach is going to talk to the high school coach and if your an ass then hopefully the high school coach will tell the college coach you are an ass. Sounds to me like you are like most kids nowadays: know it alls, lazy, disrespectful, spoiled, and feel like everything should be handed to you with a fork.
JMC actually I am planning on XC Skiing in college not playing tennis. I am actually being D-1 recruited

Come on guys. weren't you once young, imature and all knowing. Ease up. There is a famous quote, whose source I cannot remember, that goes something like this......"Youth is wasted on the young." Might have been Mark Twain.

are you that jaded man? to believe that all kids who volunteer and help thier communities are just putting on a front, some kids are like that, and i'll give you that......but to belive that its not possible that they might not just feel like helping people out which is the majority of kids, then ya know.....thats cold

This is an old thread that got dug up. The first post was made in March 2004 and right up until today was dormant. :)
