I'm about 5' 9", and I've been hitting my 1HBH with the extreme backhand grip on the hardcourts. However, recently I tried the eastern bh grip that federer uses, and it worked for me as well except for the fact that the contact point was lower. I was wondering which grip in your opinion would be better suited for the hardcourts? Especially b/c of today's topspin game.

The regular eastern BH grip which Federer uses. I guess for higher balls, extreme BH grip will be suitable because extreme grips are good for high balls! For hard courts the Eastern BH grip should be ok. If it works for Roger, it should also work for you.

sounds reasonable to me. I was just thinking b/c most players use a lot of topspin today, most of the balls would kick up high near my backhand so I should use the extreme grip. But like you said, if it the eastern works for federer, it can work for me.

fed uses regular eastern bg grip and a very close continental for his slice.

I've always hit with the normal eastern bh grip for my 1hbh topspin and continental for slice. If you're playing someone that hits heavy topspin that jumps up on your bh side, I would suggest either taking the ball on the rise to keep the ball from going way above waist level, or stand back a few feet from the baseline to catch it on the way down (although I prefer the former method a lot more) if you want to hit topspin. Hitting high balls with a normal eastern grip is very difficult because it puts your wrist in a very uncomfortable position. You can always hit a high ball with slice on a 1hbh, but you don't want to limit yourself to just doing this on all high balls.
