Why do people yell "Tree!" when someone hits a good shot? I understand what tree means, like having a great day where no one can stop you, but how does the word tree pertain to tennis at all?

I agree it's a strage phrase. I don't know how long it's been around, but I remember people using it back in the 80s. Perhaps it dates back to the wooden racquet era?

I love this term and have not heard it as much since the late 80's, early 90's. Its totally random, defies explanation, but hilarious when i still hear it.

I used this phrase in the 80's and 90's. I think it is refers to the wood era, sort of a "lumberjack" analogy. We used this even when playing with graphite racquets...Part of the fun in tennis is the lexicon of the game and learning to talk a good game. Something I might have said in that era would be " That guy was playing unconscious and just totally treeing. "

The terms "tree" or "treeing" originate from the days when rackets were only made out of wood. When a player could not seem to miss a shot he was said to be playing with the whole tree and not just the part used to make the racket.

'80's and 90's already had graphite and composite rackets com-on guys... A Ashe,Conners were using steel and composite in the 70's ..
TREE when I played college tennis was yelled out when we hit some one with the ball (like head hunting) mostly was done in doubles when the opponents were at net and we beaned them... It was said to be cutting down a tree...

nowadays, when you tree something, it means you hit it as hard as you can and it still goes in

instead of hearing "tree", i hear people say "choice."

Man, that shot was "choice."

hahaha, then my coach said it was popular when he was in high school (early 90's).

like bab pure drive roddick said, nowadays treeing means just hitting as hard as you can and getting lucky
