5 of the 8 quarter finalists are between age of 19 and 22.
Almagro 22, Nadal and Monfils 21, Djokovic, 20, Gulbis 19.
Federer is the oldest semi-finalists at 2 month shy of 27 while other 3 are 20-21....

yes, but the topfield is quite young in general as well. It's not like in the days of Agassi, Sampras, Ivanisevic and stuff.

Federer is the oldest top 10 player as well, with 26! Roddick isn't top 10 on clay, only Nalbandina was a more experienced player in the top 10 that I'd expected to make the final 16 at least, may be 8. There's a lot of talent, and it'll be interesting to see how long the mighty Fed will hold them from that number 1 spot. Good tournament for tennis, though I'd like to see the top guys at least standing a chance to slip up. The gap between Fed and the rest was always terrifying, but the gap hasn't closed it just moved to places down I'm afraid.

is this a sign of things to come, with 20 year olds edging out older guys, or is this just a very good crop of youngsters coming through, who will still be up there in 4/5/6 years?

in the cases of gulbis and obviously nadal and djoko i think the latter.
