View Full Version : Racquet journeys!!

As tennis players, we have gone through many a racquet on quest to find our holy grail. For some, our racquet journey reflects a progress in our skill. To others, it demonstrates our ever growing enamorment for the game of tennis. My itinerary looks something like this

Wilson Nemesis (cheapo frame) --> Wilson Titanium (another cheapo frame) --> Volk DNX 8 --> Wilson Prostaff ROK --> Wilson Hyper Prostaff --> Volkl DNX 8 (again lol)

What does your racquet journey look like?

I've tried several others, but these are the ones I played with for at least an entire season (leagues etc). There were some others back in the beginning, but I just can't remember them now. In the 70's and early 80s, the PDP Open was about the best hitting aluminum frame I'd hit with. Unfortunately, the screws that held the throat piece in kept coming out, and the rackets were hard to get anyway. Oshmans got me to switch to the Head Pro, which didn't hit nearly as well. The Bard was a good hitting frame too, but I cracked several of them in the throat. The company always replaced them until they went under.

06-09-2008, 04:17 PM
Bought Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 as a beginner. Quickly realized I couldn't handle it. Switched to Dunlop 300G. Switched briefly to Pro Kennex Kinetic Pro 5G when I thought I had tennis "elbow" in my wrist. Switched back to 300G. Fell in love with Prince O3 Tour 100". Quickly fell out of love, switched back to 300G. Recently made switch to Head Microgel Radical 98; very satisfied thus far.

I have never hit with a Ashe Competition Edge. I've hit with an aluminum Head Edge, but only briefly.

I did leave off the Pro Kennex 10g PSE. Foolish, as it was one of my favorites.

Dunlop Pastime - yeah, I started with a wooden racquet, and i'm only 16 :\

Pro Kennex Cheap Thingy - a bit easier to manage, I was very very small.

Wilson Hyper Hammer 26 - thought it was awesome because it was so light :P

Prince O3 Red - served me well for a while, then I grew tired of the thing. It didn't fit my game anymore.

Wilson nBlade 98 - I wish I had more than one. This thing has a beautiful feel.

07-12-2008, 01:45 AM
Cheap aluminium racquet
Estusa Power Beam, in that time almost all racquets were player's racquets, tweeners just started to emerge on the markets. This racquet is very typical and in retrospect I think, although I played more or less with it, I could have found a better fit.
Agassi Radical MPyep, the original bumblebee, very good control oriented racquet.
TiRadical MP the "go for something lighter" trend struck me. Decent racquet still and played heavier than it was. Still a bit stiffer and I started having problems with TE.
4 or 5 years break from tennis, when I came back to tennis started with the TiRadical again but quickly changed.
Prince Original Graphite OS picked this racquet because I found it in a scientifical research as best racquet for TE, although I had never played with an oversize before. A spin monster. An oversize that plays like a midplus mostly. Did not like the net play with this one though.
Wilson Reflex mid unknown gem. A friend sold me one I first bought as a collectionable. Off course I also took it out for a spin. WOW Rock solid, powerful, compact, great net play, bomb serves. I played the best tennis of my life with this socalled oldfashioned old school frame. Only disadvantages: heavy and probably (I don't have the exact specs) very high swingweight. When you are on nothing could play better. But when you haven't played for a few days you might have problems finding your rythm on 1HBH with all the weight in the head.
After becoming member of this forum racquet addiction LOL
Redondo MP and midvery underpowered especially the second although it has better feel. Not realistic to play with.
Volkl VE Mid Very good racquet, long but too narrow sweetspot.
Donnay Pro One MP classical old school racquet. Does not do a single thing wrong. The epitome of a decent player's racquet.
C10 pro very particular feel, can understand some people love this, but it's not really that remarkable for me. Still, very decent racquet.

Starting from when I was a kid (as best I can remember)...

- A Pro Kennex XL1000
(dept. store - I only know that's what it was because I still have it. I actually played with it the other day after fixing the grip. It still has a broken string too. Surprisingly? It hit pretty well.)

- I think I then got a graphite Pro Kennex with a neon green butt cap, another dept store racquet.

- From there I think it was a Wilson 5.3 Stretch

- I then got a Cayman frame, the Catalyst I think.

- Next up was the Ti Radical. I liked that so much it was my first multiple frame purchase.

- After I broke all my Ti's I tried the LM Radical. I didn't like it at all.

- What I hated about the LM Radical was the flexing. It felt like I was twisting the hoop on my shots. So, I tried the M-Fil 500. I liked that it wasn't flexy but without being able to maintain the high string tension my shots almost always landed long if I hit with any pace. That was even after weighting the racquet to almost 14 oz.

- Now I'm on the M-Fil 200 (18x20). So far it has been liveable, although my Ti Radical remains my favorite racquet to date.

Can't remember what junior rackets i used - mostly prince and wilson.

The real fun started when i was 12:
Titanium Graphite 720 from Prince - longbody. Basically the current classic one with the extra brace in the triangle area. Lovely racket. Not incredibly powerful, but i was a 180lb 12 year old (massively fat) and I really used the control.....my opponents ran, never me!!!

Upgraded (although that might be a misnomer) when i was 15 to a hyper hammer from wilson - 6.3power rating or something. Huge 115sqin head. Like a frying pan. I was really lazy when i used this - but it was soooo powerful and I could still control the ball.

Then it was a Triple Threat Bandit when i was 18- Midplus of 100sqin. Slightly heavier - lots of power, more control than the hammer but still I wasn't happy. It did vibrate a lot and jarred my rist.

Forced me to move to a Triple Threat Hornet when i was 20 (given for free when i got the bandit for some reason two years+ previously but never strung) - 98sqin or so - heavier than the bandit by a smidge, smaller head, tighter strings, more control, lots of power, but a bit unstable imo. Not sure whether it is the grip or the racket and the people i play against. I'm now no longer clinically obese and 22.

Thinking about an ugprade -
Either to a wilson ksix-one 95 or 90, or the O3 speedport Tour (orange).

03 will be more like my hornet with the speed, but with extra weight.
K-six one 95 will be similar to the hornet but heavy. the 90 will be something entirely different though - less power and a fair bit more control.

I think I'm about a 4.5 to 5 on your ntrp scale (being in uk it isn't something i know much about).

From what I can remember of the ones I really played with:

- Donnay Jnr Racquet x2 (size changed as I got bigger)
- Donnay Pro Cynetic (with rubber weight thingys)
- Donnay Pro One (Orange and grey like Agassi!)
- PS 6.0 85
- Radical Trisys MP (Bumblebee)
- PS 6.0 85 again (broke Bumblebee :) )
- Wilson Hammer 4.0 (6 weeks, hated)
- Wilson Profile (grey one, 4 weeks ish, hated also)
- PSC 6.1 (5+ yrs)
- Gamma Trad 2.0 (year)
- Wilson Hammer "Ultra" 5.5 Spin (red, what a disaster! snapped 2 in 2 months)
- PSC 6.1 once more (5+ yrs again)
- LM Radical MP (customised)
- Fischer Pro One (red one, only 4months)
- RDS003 (customised)
- Vantage 95

I own and have played with others over times, notably the POG, Prince Precision, PC600, C10 Pro, PDR, 200G but never consistently i.e. usually as a "mess around" racquet. Also quite a few woodies from my dad/brothers.

It's a long story. The short answer is location of mass. I posted on it here to try and explain:

Make sense?

Cheers, Orig

Hi origmarm,

Kidda, but I never found any issues with the upper loop feeling dead in fact quite the opposite. I found the upper loop more lively than most frames I've tried and I do hit fairly high up on the frame.

Anyway, glad to see that you got the frame to work the way you want it to.

Year 1( cont/eastern grip, synthitic gut):
Prince ThunderCloud(tons of free power yey! tension at 70lbs for controll, feels like crap though, lets go heavy)
Wilson Six-One 95 (black with yellow red one) (heavy is good..too heavy? old rackets suck)
Babolat PureDrive Roddick (short lived, strange, can't get consistency)
Fischer Pro One(red) and Pro SL(yellow - soft and long = spin and control? trouble with short angles)

Year 2 (eastern/semi-western, poly/sgut hybrid):
Yonex RDS001 MP leaded to 12oz.
Head Radical MP - nice but too light/soft, leading up feels funny
Donnay Pro One (95) with some lead
Pro Kennex Redondo Mid with some lead.

Year 3 (semi-western/western and polyester strings):
Head Prestige Mid (a bit lead, leather)
Babolat PureDrive, no lead, full poly - switching to more and more western strokes with more bent arm and more torso use, eventually frame too light.

Final(?): Kblade 98 with leather and a bit of lead at 11.9oz 5 points HL. Comfortable, powerful, responsive, controlled.

Toyed with many other frames along the way.
