View Full Version : What happened to the overhead in women's tennis?

I don't get it. Everybody seems to hit the swinging volley now. Check out this video from the 86 French Open final between Martina and Chris. Chris wasn't really a net player, but watch her combination overhead/volley at the 1:30 mark. Then watch her hit a drop volley on match point. I miss seeing tennis like this.

I can see the swinging volley making sense from inside the baseline as a way to approach, but why do players hit a swinging volley at the net instead of an overhead?

The overhead is more physical. There's also more pressure in hitting it.

The women are all pussies...well...

Not another one-sided highlight reel. The 1984 French that the Tennis Channel rebroadcast had Navratilova hit an unreturnable smash from the baseline. Now that was impressive. She should have stuck with the R-27.

I was wondering about the same question over and over again when I watch women's tennis. they only know how to swing volley.

ya. henin is the last one I saw.

Yeah, you don't see as many overheads as in the past. Sadly, another thing that left with Henin.
