View Full Version : Got my hands on a ProStaff 6.0 clone today

This is a very interesting racquet; here are some facts:

Made in Taiwan
Says its made of 100% Graphite
Has genuine cowhide grip
Has similar graphics to the PS 6.0 85/95
No bumper guard
Grommets on the bottom are three individual pieces, rather than one like the newer models have
Probably a 85", seems a little smaller than my 90" POG
Has PBS instead of PWS (this made me laugh)

I have not had a chance to string it up, weigh it, or anything of that sort, but should be able to tomorrow. I am interested to see how the specs turn out.
Since there are so many fakes on the market today, it was refreshing to see one that was not so blatant a fake/clone/or copy. Handle still has the plastic on it as well. Thought everyone on this board would enjoy this racquet. Here are some pics:

Funny looking for sure. Let us know when you weigh it etc...

I hear Pro Supex makes a PS 6.0 type clone (just not the PJ)

Is it just me, or does the head look a little more round-ish, ala Prince racquets?

Is this a clone, too?
Can anyone tell, if 85 or 95?

In the late 90's (96-98ish), Pro Supex made a racquet which looked, for all intents and purposes, like the PS 6.0 85 but had a 90sq frame, rather than an 85sq one. The graphics were also slightly different (purple trim instead of red) and there was no leather grip.
A little under 10 years later Wilson released the Pro Staff Tour which looked, for all intents and purposes, like a copy of the Pro Supex Tour 90.

nice pants....

Thanks! :)

I have not had a chance to do anything with it yet, but tomorrow (Tuesday) I'm going to take it to my local tennis shop and see what type of info I can get about it. Sadly I do not have a stringing machine so it will take a day for me to get it back and hit with it. I picked it up from some local guy who had a few frames that his wife wanted him to get rid of for space reasons.

A question: will anyone refuse to work on a racquet because it is not quite authentic?
Just wondering what to expect before I go in tomorrow.

Weighed in at 11.7oz unstrung. I am not sure of the exact headsize still, but it could be anywhere from an 85-88 perhaps. I do not have another 85 to compare it to. Is there a noticeable difference between an 90 and 85. There really is not much between a 95 and 90, so who knows! It will be back from the Stringer tomorrow.

Would someone in Taiwan actually create their own mold, with PWS? Or have they made it from a Wilson mold?

Is there anyone in the Fresno/Clovis area of California that can help me find out more info about this racquet? i.e. swingweight, stiffness, etc.

Thanks!

For anyone who is interested:

12oz even strung weight
Almost even balance, maybe one point head heavy.
(This racquet may be quite difficult to move around the court)
***Maybe some lead tape near the handle would help.

I'd put half an ounce of lead at the butt and give it a whirl.

Looks interesting.

PBS = "Perimeter Balance System?"

I went out and played a few sets this morning without any changes (no lead). Let me just say, it put the most strain on my elbow that a racquet ever has! However, it had a lot of pop on forehands and for such a small head, I was surprised how much solid contact I made. Serves took some getting used to. I might have a chance to go out tomorrow and play a few more sets. It was strung with Gosen OG-Sheep Micro Super 17 at 60 pounds. I have a few extra of these racquets, so hopefully I like them! :) I honestly wouldnt mind shipping one of these to someone if they can find more info on it, since I do not have the equipment (just pay for shipping). I'm not trying to sell it, I just want to know more about it. Let me know.

How do you find the swingweight by the way?

Bri-guy

Bump...

Anyone willing to pay for shipping, keeping the racquet (4 5/8) of course, so I can find out more info about this stick?

Take it to the nearest pro shop, and ask them to do a RDC test.

Well, I've got to say, you're lucky to pick these up.

they sell this one still

NAME :TOUR MILLENIUM
COMPOSITION :80% CARBON+20%GLASS+PWS
BALANCE : 31-32CM (UNSTRUNG)
HARDNESS: RA-65~67 .min (UNSTRUNG)
PROFILE : 21mm
WEIGHT :300-310g (UNSTRUNG)
HEAD SIZE:613cm2 /95 SQ.IN

it looks (and probably feels like) a pro staff 95... i never played with it so..?

So, after hitting with this racquet for a while, I have a question and an observation:

1. Does 1 point head heavy + 12oz overall weight = elbow pain?

Two sets with this thing made my elbow hurt like never before! Would adding some weight in the handle make it easier on the elbow? Or is the racquet a lost cause?

2. After looking around online, it seems that the stats on this racquet are similar to what "actual" Wilson fakes are. Perhaps the maker just ran out of their kFactor paint. :)

If anyone is interested in one of these racquets, I got all grip sizes but would prefer to keep my no. 2s and no. 3s, I would not mind shipping one out. I would really like some feedback from someone who is more knowledgeable about the Wilson PS line. Cheers!

If you're willing to wait for another year for specs, I can get them. A pro shop near me (kind of- it's about 30 minutes away) has a RDC machine. Considering I take piano lessons roughly 15 minutes away from the place, I can probably get you specs once I start driving. However, that'll take another 9 months. Do you feel like waiting that long?

Bri-guy
10-11-2008, 07:15 PM
A year is a little long, but I will consider it. However, the racquet I would send would need strings, so unless you string racquets yourself ( I don't ) it does't sounds like a lot of fun to have a racquet sitting at your place for a year until you can make it over to your tennis store. Its no fun unless you at least get to play with it in the mean time. :)

meow, what racquet is in that picture?

Bri-guy
10-11-2008, 07:20 PM
Truth is, I got 12 of these sticks just sitting at my place. My wife thinks they are taking up too much room. I was planning on donating some to my school's tennis team that has no funding and needs sticks, but I don't think many of the girls can handle 12oz + sticks; They are all beginners. So I really would not mind sharing a little.

Manswerez, that's a pic I found in a thread last night. It's the W5 Divine Iris, it's a spoof on Drakulie's pic of Yoda w/ a PS85.

Bri-guy, true. A few people around here visit the tennis shop quite often, so it's possible that I could send it with one of them. But that's probably a long shot...

Oh, and you can also use TW's swingweight calculator to figure out swingweight.

I think I remember seeing one of those when I was in Shanghai last year. Not sure, considering how many fakes there were, but that curvy script kind of reminds me... I think the seller was selling it for 1500RMB (200 bucks by today's standards), and he was trying to pass it off as a genuine PS 85 that got itself a new paint job. Of course, he had 50 other rackets in the shop, and every babolat was fake...

Didn't really believe him, but it gives you a little food for thought.

Bri-guy
10-12-2008, 10:59 AM
$200?! That ridiculous.

Who would spend that much for a racquet that doesn't even look remotely authentic, well, besides the colors. Let me see if I can figure out the swingweight today using TW's calculator.

Tennis in China is expensive. A legit K90 (ak90 or usk90) costs 2300-2500 RMB. Considering the current exchange rate of about 1 buck for 6.93 RMB, that comes out to be about 350 bucks.

10-12-2008, 11:26 AM
Oh, and if you really need to get rid of them, ship em here!

Also, check out this link... Do you think that your PS85 clones could be made to these specs?

I have a friend that strings for me, and he charges about 5 bucks for labor. So essentially, yes. I'd prefer a 4 3/8, but I'd take anything from 0 to 4 1/2. 5/8 is a bit too big for me. sorry

I don't think the stick vibrates like crazy, but I think it does a little more than what I usually play with. Then again, I have not hit with it a ton. The elbow pain was no fun. However, I added .5oz in the handle to try to make it slightly head light. Have not had a chance to hit with it yet. I just got a teaching job a month ago at a school 70 miles away, so I spend most of my time before and after school driving. I do have a lot of time to think about tennis though!

I figure shipping will be around $15. I've shipped using DHL before for about that price. Any other suggestions on the best ways to ship a racquet? Sorry for the delayed response.

I can test it if you want to send it up here... Seems like some fun... just dug out my old St. Vincent the other day... after swinging the new Sampras frame around (Sample not a hitter).. we wanted to see them side by side... knock off looks interesting. I can test it up and send it back if you like. My club has a RDC.
