I have been on the website for the national boys 16 and 18 championships in Kalamazoo MI and was scrolling down the list of college coaches in attendance. I notice that the list was very short considering the number of schools that have teams all over the country. Coaches are missing from major conferences such as the SEC, ACC, and almost no Div 2-3. I would understand if a coach had no scholarships or roster spots for the upcoming year, but why not go to recruit in the 16s division for future years. Do they not have the travel money in their budgets? Are they only looking overseas for players? There really is no excuse for not being there, especially in the middle of summer. I played this tourney as a junior and loved just watching all the great matches. Somebody in the junior circles please let me know what is going on as I am very curious. Thanks

Most have camps going on and therefore unable to attend. Albeit, prestigious, it is just another National Tournament only attended by those already being recruited or declared professional (harrison, thacher, klahn and the like) and lastly yes, it means little to them as the little scholarship money they do have left will likely go to a non resident alien or highly ranked ITF player. Times keep moving along, the "zoo" doesn't have the power it use to have. Remember Sampras breakout tourney in Phillidelphia, where is that now, and whos playing in it

Your're probably right about $$ and foreign players.. there are still a bunch of recru1ts here but the top name d1 schools already know and most likely have all the top guys commited with them already... the ones I see here are the d1 schools that are not your super top d1s ... the top d1 coaches who are here are just here to watch their players under tournament conditions to see how they do against other top players...

Coaches dont normally care whether they see players or not these days. They look at Results, in all types of tournaments...money tournaments, futures,ITF juniors, sectionals...etc., u get the point.
If the wins are there...the coach will be interested. Sometimes thats good and bad. I remember a freshman came to my school ranked in the top 15 in the nation, had many wins in the juniors. Good tournaments. Everyone on the team figured he could play ball. When he showed up in the fall, we were like wtf. The kid could not break an egg with the ball, did not do anything with his serve, and did not even play great defense. When he was up against futures level players that we had in our lineup, he could not do anything against us. So judging by the wins can bite ur ass as a coach as well.

I talked to an Ivy league coach today at KZoo and he knows about the player he's interested in but came to really see for himself if the kid can fit in his style of program... he's also interested the kid's home life and talked to his mom(can't talk to the kid during the tournament)..so it depends on with school you are talking about..some of the Stanford staffs are here just to watch their 2 lefties ...I'm sure they already know everything about them and they already have commited so why are they still watching? if not to know more of their players...

On Saturday, the first day of the Girls National, I spotted the Head Coach of the men's tennis team from Cal Berkeley at the Club house. I was wondering why he wasn't in Kalamazoo to watch the boys.

Figuring, as someone has already menitoned, he has probably dialed in on his picks, so there was no real need for him to go, especially if the players have committed via letters of intent.

Do they not have the travel money in their budgets?

If I may add, the Cal Berkeley Coach is technically a State Employee, all expenses are frozen until a budget is signed by the "Governator" Arnold Schwarzenneger.
