I see the women do it and a lot of basketball players are starting to do it too. I was wondering if it has been done before in male tennis?

They used to wear slacks...does that say enough?

I think Henri Leconte used to wear extra high socks when he played back in the 80s.

I've seen some late 70s pics featuring Guillermo Vilas and Vitas Gerulaitis, both with their socks pulled up around their calves. And Henri Leconte too.

Chip Hooper, an African-American player from the 80's, used to wear his socks up high, similar to basketball players of that era (helped that Hooper was 6ft 6). Also, as MAXXply said, Guillermo Vilas used to wear his over the calf, on occasion.

LeConte and Vitas never wore high over the calf socks! The most commen socks were the Nike (Vitas) or Ellesse (LeConte, Vila, Becker...) and Fila that were just under the calf - The 3/4 shoe was also popular with some players and it made it look higher.

VILAS on the other hand in 1980 or 1981 did wear high over the calf socks when he switched to Ellesse. Even worse they were striped HORIZONTALLY they were ugly! AND he would at times roll them down to his ankles and he would end up with what looked like striped Bagels around each ankle. dumbest looking thing ever - just utube his match vs. Wilander in the 82 French open final - you can see for yourself.

I also remember playing aganist Chip in college and don't I remember him wearing anything over the calf - he would have been laughed off the court if he did - He was tall and lanky and with that Prince 110 graphite he used his serve looked like it came down from the stands.

He most certainly did wear them, regardless of what he did in college (although I've seen a pic of him at Arkansas and he was going pretty darn high, even then). I remember quite clearly laughing, along with my school mates, while watching him play at one of the old pro events. He looked liked he'd wandered in off the basketball court and was swinging, at that stage, a Prince Boron. Switched over to some Donnay racquet by the next time we saw him.

Ivanisevic would always pull up his socks, didn't like them to slack down on his ankles.

If you look at the pic with Vilas at the 78 open and look at the ball boy right behind those socks (good ol'converse) would be called "high" today - fairly normal for 70's and early 80's. I just can't remember anyone having stuff reach up to their knees. time to break out old photo's.

Seeing those striped socks again from Vilas still hurts - and when he ROLLED them down to his ankles - o my god.
