So far I can only think of Safin...

Any others? Especially in the top echelon of ranking?

Well dampeners dampens the sound and perhaps takes away a little bit of power...

Some special dampener can dampens the racquet shaft vibration, like my old one, which increases comfort.

However, since my arm's stronger and that I shank a lot less balls now, I'm starting to like the sound my racquet makes when hitting without a dampener.

Dampeners do nothing but get rid of the ping that a racquet makes at contact. You would need a vibration dampener the size of a shoe to actually make any difference in the feel. It's completely mental.

Your comment does applies to the majority of dampeners (including rubber bands), but there are some dampeners designed to reduce racquet SHAFT vibrations and they do make a big difference in the feel.

I've used that dampener at least 7 yrs in OS racquets. Some Yonex racquets among others have soft, rubberlike grommets for the bridge at the hoop's bottom that seems to damp those pings IMHO and experience.

What?? Maybe power pads made of leather not tissue.

I thought dampeners reduce vibration that can cause tennis elbow? or this is all a mental joke.

I'd support the theory that it's a mental joke. I love my rubberband dampener, but only because it changes the way my strings sound when I hit.

Well, to the persons saying it is a mental thing: blinfold me, shut my ears and I will tell you which racquet has a dampener and which one does not. It does make a change although as mentioned it doesn't take away frame vibration, at least it takes away string vibration after you hit the ball, either you like that either you don't.

Okay! Wants to really find out if your dampener makes a difference in the feel?

Without a dampener, with racquet face facing you and handle pointing down, use your fingers to hold the middle part of each side of your racquet frame, and gently tap the handle on a wall. Feel the racquet vibration.

Now, repeat the above process with the dampener on.

It's completely mental.I can tell the difference in feel immediately. The "ping" IS vibration. There's no distinction to be made between the sound and feel, it's two ways of sensing the same thing.

I use it. I kind of wish I didn't have to but I just prefer the way my racket feels with the dampener.

they're called power pads, their made of leather and are placed at the grommets to reduce the sharp angle the gut has to wrap around, making it last longer. it has slight vibration dampening, but this is not the purpose of power pads.

i believe davydenko actually does use a dampener, possibly the pete sampras "O" from unique. i've seen him with them before.

yeah, i can actually feel (not hear) the difference in playing w/ or w/out a dampener. it's a very subtle change but i like rackets with large amounts of feel slightly dampened.

and i use the smiley face one which is always so KOOL

dunno

+1

Sounds are vibrations.

It also depends on how much of the string vibration (the "ping") travels down to the racquet shaft and then to your wrist and arm.

Yeah, it "feels" different. But the difference in the amount of shock that is transferred to your arm is nil.

If you guys are saying that a little rubber grommet can significantly impede the kinetic forces of a ball moving into a racquet, you are in need of a) an education or b) mental help.
