My 1HBH always has some side-spin to it. Not good?
It seems that at contact with the ball I am brushing 45 degree at it.

No its good to have side-spin, as a matter of fact put more side-spin, and slice it as much as you can. Topspin is for noobs.

Hmmm. Is it possible you are hitting it too early, and as a result brushing the ball from left to right (if you are right-handed)??

Sidespin can be good, because often your opponent doesn't like it. If it is there every shot, though, he'll probably adjust. Don't pull your backhand across your body, follow-through towards the net instead. This should get rid of the sidespin. When rallying, hit several flat shots, then when your opponent gets used to this, give him one with sidespin. Alot of times, that will end the rally in your favor.

i assume you mean topspin not slice bh( since some sidespin on an underspin can be ok and or intentional) sidespin ( more 9-3 spin instead of 6-12)means you are coming across the ball rather than up the back of the ball. usually this comes from opening up too soon and/or hitting late not too early.since pure topspin 6-12 is not always acheived 7-1 or at most 8-2 spin at times can be ok. where your hand finishes, up or to the side will give you an indicationof whether you are coming up or acoss the ball

Another thing can cause unintentional side-spin. I was dropping my racket head too much on my takeback. That gave me unwanted side-spin instead of the topspin I was looking for. It also gave me tennis elbow.

topspin should naturally come if you are using your legs correctly.

Many times sidespin is a sign of too much rotation during the contact point of the ball. In other words, you are rotating away from the ball a bit while hitting it. The non-dominant arm can hold your rotation as your arm passes through. Go through the ball and extend.

Some of Fernando Gonzalez's backhands have sidespin as well. If you look at his backhand sometimes he hits across the ball as well as through it giving it the sidespin.
I remember a match in particular where he wasn't timing it to well and he would go for an up the line backhand and it would seriously side spin wide.
THe only time my 1HBH has sidespin is when I catch a shot to my backhand late which is somewhat hit to my body. I have to make the adjustment and hit across the ball to get the ball back in play.

Done and done. Problem corrected. My pro is the one who spotted the problem.
Thanks for your concern, though . . . :)

highly doubt the problem has been corrected, and I'm not conerned. I would be more concered if I played in your league and knew you were policing the bathrooms, as you have already admitted to. Especially considering you like to video tape stuff..

sidespin is great to have, but sometimes, it majorly gets in your way, like when you're trying to hit a really close up the line shot or hitting corners... but don't think it's bad, just adjust your shots to make sure the sidespin doesn't force your shots out, no matter how slight it is

This seems an odd question, because if you saw nothing wrong with the sidespin, then why the question?
Anyway, there may be times when you might want a certain amount of intermediate spin on the ball, but if you hit that way all the time, and cannot control it, then, obviously you have a problem.
The whole idea od the game is to learn to control the ball-- make it do your bidding (insane laugh).
So, yes, you might need some help to get yourself on the right path so that you can learn to control the spin you put on the ball and use it to best advantage in the right situations.

like someone said, you are opening up your body too soon and pulling across too much.
Obviously, this is not an ideal technique. You might hit a lot of decent / good cross court backhand, but you might have trouble hitting bh down the line.
I had similar problem like this, tried to fix it for many months and never did....Well perhaps it got better a little bit.

I have this problem too... my coach said that i'm not contacting the ball
in front, the ball is too close to my body. Whats the remedy? Should
I move back more with my feet ? ... and oh yeah, its giving my wrist
problems too.
