When im running to the net to return a short, very high ball to the backhand side near the net
Assume you cant run around it and forehand it
I usually hit these out or into the net

I'm assuming the ball bounces? Or is the scenario that you hit an aggressive shot off of a short ball and come in to find the opponent hitting a short defensive lob shot to the backhand that you must volley?

Both scenarios are about not overplaying the ball.
If you have decent hands at net, when you are going to be forced to hit a high volley on your backhand side just punch the ball cross court preferably at a sharp angle, try to aim to make the ball land in the service box and continue going outwards. It's a bit of an advanced shot, but you should be able to manage it. At worst, you might frame the ball which would just look like a very nicely played drop shot :)
The scenario with the ball bouncing is all about footwork. The mistakes you are probably making are from being incredibly over aggressive and trying to run and jump into the shot without a pause to set up. Get up to the ball quickly and stop and begin racquet preparation maybe even before totally reaching the ball. Since I use a two-hander I will usually try to hit an aggressive cross court (lower part of the net) shot. Depending on your skill level you may even want to perform a jumping two-hander aka Safin or Hewitt to be able to take the ball at an even higher point which will allow you to hit downwards more. Either way, it's about being comfortable and not overplaying the shot.
