This past weekend I was in Virginia for a cousin's wedding and we stayed at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg. Other than being a course on the LPGA tour, they had some clay courts there as well. I've never played on any surface in my life other than hard court....and cheap public park concrete. The clay was green and tough to move on, granted I was wearing running shoes. It was hard to do a 180 degree turn because I was slipping every time. The ball bounced higher than I expected and when it hit the lines, it would skid or take a funny bounce because the lines weren't painted on, but they were slightly elevated made of what looked like rubber. I've been always wanting to hit a shot while sliding on clay and it's just like I dreamed :)

Kingsmill is a great place. The running shoes will kill you on clay. Good thing you didn't twist an ankle.

Try with real tennis shoes next time. Clay is great. Much softer, and less wear and tear on the body.

Glad you had a nice time at Kingsmill, it is a nice resort.

Fun isn't it? I've never been able to find many clay courts in the places I've lived, but I enjoy them more. They make for longer rallies. Remember when you started tennis? The rallies were too few and far between. On clay, you can enjoy longer rallies, and since this also provides more practice, it's a better way to learn the game.

I love clay. There needs to be more clay around - it makes for happy knees. My kick serve is a monster on clay - I've never seen the ball jump like it did on clay.

i got to play on red clay one time and had a great time. i had some amazing rallies on it... usually ending with sliding into the splits and not being able to get out of them or sliding into the fence or something. one day wasn't quite long enough for me to get a full slide and recovery thing down pat. but like i said it was a blast.

Played in Destin on clay. Loved it!

I was wondering if I would slip on my butt, But I didn't. The guys were shocked when I said it was the first time on clay. I loved the gliding sliding for a wide forehand!

I love clay. Your legs don't take much of a pounding, so you can stay out there and play more. . . so remember to drink your water!

Love clay hartru, and have been playing on it all summer. Last weekend I hit on a hard court a couple of times and was quickly reminded of the difference the impact has on the knee joints for those of us in their 40's.
