View Full Version : Weight distribution when serving?

I just found an article that says the weight has to be equally distributed between the two feet when the knees are bent.
Is this right?
I've always thought that the weight is to be placed more on the front (left in case of a right hander) leg.
Can someone enlighten please?

False. You want your weight mostly on the front leg. The back leg is mostly for balance.

Well a good coach of mines told me if more weight is put on one leg then you'll be falling already and wont have an "EXPLOSIVE" serve.
He made me stay in the knee bend position until my legs gave out to see how long I can stay balanced. If more weight is put on unevenly then you can't possible stay in that position without already having some alteration in your balance.
- So you have to have a good knee bend -together- and explode forward (assuming its a first serve).
Try it, it helps.

But you don't need to stay in that position. The knee bend takes like one second. If you have equal weight on both legs then you'll jump straight up, rather than forward and up.

watch sampras, and federer they both use the same coach. and they serve almost identical. front leg loading back leg balance and stabilizer.
Michael Chang have the same coach also. and same serve motion on feet usage.
Most Coach have different oppinion, but how many Grand slam they won?

I guess it depends on how you look at it. If, while your knees are bent, your weight is evenly distributed, I image it would allow you to better propel yourself into your serve.
But then again if you figure you have less weight on your back leg, you'll be able to use your core and pronate more. So both.

It's a dynamic motion and the weight shifts. As the knees are bending the weight shifts from the rear leg toward the front leg and most of the jump is off of the front leg when using the platform stance. This is easy to see if you watch the serve in slow motion.
It might be different for a lot of pinpoint stance servers. They tend to have a more even use of the legs for the jump.
In any case, the jump is out and up into the court. This gets a better angle and transfers more of the bodyweight behind the shot.

Most players transition their weight from the back leg to the front leg during the service motion. Since you want to push up from both legs to get power on your serve you want to be fairly well balance when you start the upwards thrust; however, by the end you want most of your weight to be forward.

I think you can get a better balance, which equates to better accuracy of hitting the bal,l by having equal weight distrubution when the knees are bent but I think it might sacrafice some power. My service motion and stance (semi-platform?) mirrors Roddick's. I put more weight on my right leg (I'm a rightie) than I do on my left leg. I do put my weight in my front foot when I am about to do my service motion but it quickly goes to my right (back) leg. Try putting as much weight in you back leg when you bend your knees and explode forward diagonally. Please note that both your knees should bend the same amount. You should automatically be "lifted" if done properly. I think some people tend to just bend their knees and try to "jump" into the ball. Hope this is helpful.
