Lately I've been feeling some tenderness on the front of my foot/lower leg, basically right where the foot connects to the leg. Tried to figure out what muscle it was by looking at a diagram, but wasn't sure. Some sort of extensor? Originally only felt it when walking/jogging, but now all the time. It's very, very minor pain at this point, but it's there.

Likely causes are either because I've recently taken up light jogging, or started to do light squats and leg praises and calf raises at the gym.

So how do I nip this in the bud and prevent worsening or chronic pain without completely stopping my workouts?

I started having pain in the same exact area during my last tournament. Ended up with a swollen ankle for two days. I went to the doctor, and she suspects tendonitis, especially since the pain would really improve after the application of heat.

I also run a lot (well, I did). I was training for a 10 miler, but I've nixed that, as running really aggravates things, and tennis is my priority. I got an ASO brace that I wear when I play. I been wearing it for about a month know, and I have just been a bit gunshy about trying to play without it.

I would think that you may be feeling this because you started running. High impact, repetitive motion will do it! You may want to see a doc if you get swelling and/or the pain gets worse or doesn't improve. You'll want to rule out a stress fracture.

Can you do light impact cardio instead of jogging...such as elliptical, cycling, swimming?

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll monitor the situation and see how it progresses. I actually first noticed something similar a few weeks back, where it suddenly hurt out of nowhere as I was starting to jog. Almost felt like it had slipped out of position and just needed to slip back in.

Then the next day all was fine. Now, a couple of weeks later, I'll feeling it again. Strange.

Could be the Tibialis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibialis_anterior) anterior (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibialis_anterior) muscle or associated tendons:

Then again, it could be the Extensor digitorum longus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensor_digitorum_longus) muscle or one of the nerves running along the length of the leg or foot. Also various tendons & ligaments in the leg & foot.

Yup. Those are the likely culprits.
