Hi,
Ideas on how to handicap an Varsity vs JV "Intersquad" match. Any ideas on how to get the best out of this match-up?
Post your ideas here or:

Maybe match the #6 Varsity vs #1 JV, then #5 Varsity vs #2 JV? IDK, something like that...

Assuming you know all the players' games, try what I call and "Equalizer Match." I know my V #1 (-30) is one of the best in the region ... and the JV #1 (+30) would -- on his BEST DAY -- take maybe one single game in a 2-set match.
V #1 starts every game behind 40-Love ... and he gets only one serve per point when he's serving.
V #3 (-30) -vs- JV #3 (+15): V #3 has a BIG 1st Serve, so they have the very same game-start score as above.
Et cetera....

Depends if you simply want to work on competion or a specific part of your players' games. I think the most common way is to give the vasity players only one serve, but they'll often still break the jv's serves every time, so that works best if your jv is really strong. If you want the varsity to work on something specific, add rules to encourage development in that area. For example, give jv players use of the allies to work on movement, two bounces to play the ball to work on shot selection, take away the area above the service line on the jv side to work on hitting with depth, etc.

Just a thought on what I do every year for the varsity team I coach (I carried it over from when I coached the JV teams). I split the 2 teams in half (where I coach there are 5 positions; 3 singles 2 doubles for a total of 7 players each). I call it the "Black & Gold scrimmage" & run it the last practice of the season (usually the last non-match day of the season).
I try to make it equal by doing this:
1st singles Varsity (Black team) plays 2nd singles Varsity (Gold team)
1st singles JV (Black team) plays 3rd singles Varsity (Gold team)
3rd singles JV (Black team) plays 2nd singles JV (Gold team)
1st doubles Varsity (Black team) plays 2nd doubles Varsity (Gold team)
2nd doubles JV (Black team) plays 1st doubles JV (Gold team)
Of course this isn't an exact science, so you can make any changes to make the matchups more equal (some will always be more lopsided than others), but you'd like to see a 3-2 final regardless of who wins. I've been doing this since 1999 & it seems to work for my teams.
