View Full Version : How Many Gut Manufacturers?

Just wondering...

I know there are many different natural gut brands such as:

Babolat
Prince
Wilson
BDE
Klip
Bow
Pacific

But how many different gut manufacturers are there? I know Babolat makes Wilson natural gut. I am willing to bet someone besides Prince makes Prince natural gut. I am fairly certain Bow makes their own natural gut. But I am not sure about the others. Any input would be appreciated.

Take care.

Are you trying to choose a natural gut?

Nope. Just curious. Call me crazy, I just find it interesting to know things like this.

I've played with VS on several occasions and love it. I just bought a used stringing machine, and the guy who sold it to me threw in a set of Klip Legend (uncoated), so I will try that soon.

other than the quality of the natural gut itself, the only other difference would be how heavy the coating is. (am i correct?)

what are the coatings for? protection?

Rabbit

the coatings are for durability. They protect the string from humidity.

So we can pare the list down a little...

Babolat/Wilson
BDE/Prince
Bow
Klip/Titan
Pacific
Emerson (formerly known as Global Gut Factory)
Maillot Savarez
Gamma (But I know they don't make them. Does anyone know who does?)
Grand Slam Gut (Still in business?)
Klippermate (But I know they don't make them. Does anyone know who does?)

Any further consolidation? Any gut brands I'm missing?

Thanks Gang.

You're a funny cat, jim e. :)

Hey, by the way... I just purchased the same machine as you - SAM Pro-Master. I love it! We'll have to "talk" outside of this forum and share experiences or just go on and on about how much we love our machines. :) Feel free to email me anytime. davidahenry@ l y c o s. c o m

Has Titan gut been mentioned? (I've read it's not very good but you still want it in the list right?)

Titan is produced by Klip and is basically their line of seconds.

Has anyone ever heard of or tried Emerson Natural Gut? I believe they are a company in India that used to be called Global Gut Factory. I'll add them to my list above.

Thanks.

Isn't there a German gut? Don't know who manufacturers it, but I've heard it's pretty good.

Emerson ... is their quality good, or at least up to par?

Not that I have anything against Indian products. My ability to use English is a result of Indian education anyway.

The only German company I know of making natural gut is Pacific.

Global Gut had some quality issues. I received a demo sample from TW. I hit with it once and it was very very old school in feel, which I loved. Very responsive and felt like I used to remember gut feeling in wood. However, it broke in my bag overnight after the one outing.

^About the German gut, some players on here have reported about buying it off the bay. Supposedly it's made out of sheep intestines?

No, I think it's pirated.

The responsiveness and feel sound nice.

Was that string breaking in the bag just a one occasion event? Do you at least remember where it broke? Was it somewhere at the grommet or right in the middle?

Does Gamma make their natural gut? Or do they rebrand someone else's.....

I am not aware of a natural gut string by Gamma. I think all of their strings are synthetic. As far as their synthetics, I believe they are all made for Gamma by Toalson in Japan.

VGP - Thanks for the links. I learn something new everyday! I did not know Gamma had natural gut strings. Since Gamma is a marketing company and not a manufacturer, I wonder who makes their natural gut. If anyone knows, please post a reply. Thanks.

Regarding Emerson:
Never tried it, but their gut is recommended only at tensions <62 for 16g. Its called AS wild touch or Global Natural gut. It is only about $15 for a full set which is the cheapest around. But you have to buy 10 sets for $150, so I decided not to risk it..

I have one of my racquets freshly strung with Gamma Natural Gut 17G.

Will let you know how it plays as soon as I get to test it out.

It just looks that way because within the cardboard packaging, the string is vacuum packed in a protective foil to preserve it......

Thanks.

Says it is made in France. Do you think there is multiple gut tennis string manufactures in France? I wonder if Babolat makes this as well.

Quite possible. The price for Gamma's top natural gut is $34.95 (on a-t-s-sports. c o m). That is the same price point as VS at most online retailers.

Maillot Savarez natural gut strings are also made in France. Perhaps Gamma uses them?

Thanks.

I really don't remember if it broke at a turn or in the center of the stringbed. The racket it broke in had no grommet issues with any other strings though.
