I am thinking about being a topspin player so I can be succesful on my varsity team. I can hit it on my fore and backhand side. I understand if I can get enough topspin it can bounce really high and deep and mess the opponent up, but will it work at varsity level?Which is NTRP 4.0 up

I'd try to but you didn't mention a strategy in here. Heavy topspin shots are a tactic. Tactics are what people use to execute their strategies. As a tactic though, heavy topspin in rallies is pretty effective.

i would also hit to 1h backhand more often since i kno its weaknesses

i would also wait for a short shot and charge the net

im taller than all of the other people trying out, would that make this strategy easier?

I would add heavy topspin groundies, a HUGE serve with lot's of motion on it, very high 1st serve percentage, ability to dictate play against all styles of play, and no unforced errors. That should win you a lot of matches.

Smooth is being too funny.

But if you want to win at the high school level, definitely reduce your unforced errors by being patient and hitting safe top spin shots that go deep and go over the net buy 3+ feet. It takes a better player to beat a steady player, and along the way, you may develope enough offense to still compete.

Ok, having a bad day here, LOL. Sorry, the door was left open you know?

I agree with Nellie too. You gotta get some safe topspin at the 4.0 level. I want to make a point however. Get the notion out of your head right now, that you will be able to hit such heavy spin, that it will just mess up your opponents. Your number one goal with spin, is control, and margin of error.

Yes heavy spin will mess up 'some' guys, but people using this mental approach wind up overworking the ball, and making just as many errors as before. Guys that cannot handle spin is merely a bonus.

You want a very steady stroke, excellent footwork, minimization of UF errors, and a desire to out work your opponents. This really will allow you to win a lot of HS matches.

High School Tennis 101 - Do NOT hit three balls, and then decide you are going to up the pace and blast a winner. Please don't make this mistake.

You are a Python, not a Cobra. Forget the knockout strike. Your goal is to gain an advatageous court postition with a good shot, then apply steady pressure to maintain until they run out of air or give up so much court, you get the 'easy' put away.

thats one strategy of mine.. hit heavily top-spinned balls very deep then rush the net at the right shot.. or hitting extremely deep then mixing it up with an extremely short shot... deep top spin does work, i personally find deep top-spinned balls hard to return, however some players may find these types of shots easy to return

Do not, I mean under no circumstances, do not push against these players. Heavy top spin does not equal pushing. You need real consistency. You need to think ahead and play smart.

And try to charge the net, many players will $hit themselves when a person just gets to the net.

I mention all this because if these guys are 4.0s like you say, then you need to play really well to beat them unless you're a 4.0 urself (and I believe you said you were a 3.5?)
