What if you hit the ball with it? It would suck to lose a point because you couldn't hit the ball. :?

lol this is kind of funny because a while ago i tried this except i had i had some kind of orbit gum... never played with it but when i was bouncing the ball up and down on the strings it sounded better than no dampener at all.. of course this could be in my head,go out and try it and see if it works

LOL, why don't you try out the condom on your string, after all it's made of the same material as rubber band and bubble gum, and it's made to withstand the pounding, thrusting, and popping motion.:)

Do you think a small size would be proper for a dense 18 X 20 string pattern? Or perhaps the extra-large for increased shock absorption?

well, it's better to use a smaller size, if you use XL, you'll have wrap several layer around it, and you know, this is the same as wearing more than 2 condom, it breaks easily when you are pounding and thrusting with the balls :)
