During a service motion, is it bad to move your front foot?
My motion is:
Weight forward> weight shifted to backfoot> slide front foot forward a bit> slide backfoot forward..

well if it works for u then i guess it shouldnt be too bad. But a lot of pros said that you tend to loose some power and whip doing too many movement of the foot during the process before u hit the ball.

I would say it's not a good thing if you want consistency and power. A good serve needs good balance. If you have to move the front foot, it suggests to me there's something wrong with your balance / action. (I see a lot of intermediate players who do it, though.)

I'd say that's a good habit to get OUT of early, before it gets more ingrained. Moving your front foot can lead to footfaults, as well as add variation into a process that you want to be consistent each time. Start with your front foot where you want it to end, and go from there. You can rock forward and back, shifting your weight, without moving your foot.

Could lead to foot faults.
Also, why do you slide your front foot forward? Is it because your toss is off so you have to move forward to get it?

Like the volleyball serve,
like the baseball pitcher,
easy to get foot fault call.

Most good servers I've seen either keep their feet set in place like Federer/Sampras or drag their back foot forward. I drag my back foot forward since it seems to help me get some extra pop as I get my momentum moving forward.

As long as you can keep from foot faulting it's fine. Michael Llodra is a perfect example of a player on the pro tour who does this.

Hey thanks people.. I am trying to get rid of this front foot moving and its going well so far.. The reason I think I am doing it is I thought it gave more power chasing after my toss a little bit forward and jumping into it more. But I realised the balance and consistency was not good so I need to change it.
I also play on synthetic grass which is a slippery surface with sand on it and its easy to slide on your foot, so maybe I picked up a lazy habit. And it has lead to some footfaults...
I played a tournament on hard court the other day and on hard, you can't really slide your front foot so i kinda got into the rhythm of not sliding it.
I have a pinpoint stance (use to be platform) but I am experimenting with platform again to get into the feel of not moving the feet and then slowly I will add the back foot sliding and hope it goes all well.

I used to do the Safin shuffle all the time, but I stopped that bad habit when I started on the heel of my front foot. Stay on the front heel until the toss is completed and then move up the back foot without shuffling that front foot.
