Hey everyone. I've got a question for you all, and I'm really interested in your answers.
What is your favorite way of disguising/performing a drop shot?
I've recently decided to use drop shots a bit more in my game, and I have a pretty good one; plenty of backspin so it floats over the net by a few inches, and then the low bounce and backwards return. However, I have this issue that many people can tell when I'm about to drop, due to my stance; It's getting really annoying. Here I have a great weapon, but It's impossible to use because I'm basically flashing a sign saying "LOOK HERE, I"M ABOUT TO DROP."
I'd like to know some of the ways you guys use your drop shots?
Thanks everyone.
Have the same takeback for a slice and a dropshot, then it becomes ambigious for your oppononet.

Take the ball on the rise, and come up to the ball as if you were going to slog it.
Then just simply dink it over the net, however you want to.

Coming with a full swing and making grunting noise like your gonna explode on the ball then give a small drop

A large cape may be useful for disguising your shots (of course you should replace the TNT with a racket):

wow what if pros actually started using that, it might actually be a good idea except tripping yourself or snagging your racquet haha.

Make your body react like you are going to come over the ball with everything you have. Then hit your dropper.

Line up as if to hit a slice backhand and then bring the racket under the ball. Generates great backspin and has a high flight over the net.

Yell out "Hey man check out this forehand/backhand I'm totally about to drive!!" and then drop it.
You might be called a liar later.

My Back-Hand drop shot is great I usely do it on short ball. I dont even try to hide it, Its so good even if thy see it comeing most ppl cant get to it. Sometimes I put so much slice on the ball its gos back or sideways by a foot or more.
I can clear the net by feet and have it land a foot from it the ball does not roll over the service box. Its one of my fav shots it is the skill and finess of Tennis.

this is well disguised, without the black cape, too.

Take a huge backswing and let out a primal roar as you
get ready to rip a forehand. In mid-swing, switch to a
continental forehand and hit a dropshot.

I would think that the cape might snag on my racquet during the swing.

I saw that last summer.. I've attempted it, its NEVER worked for me.
1. I hit my shin once attempting to stop the smash and go into the drop.
2. I can't decelerate the smash well enough to let the ball just dink over.
3. I tend to clip the ball with the fake smash on accident
4. I tend to completely miss the ball
5. ???

Yeah, to be honest, it's kind of dumb. I mean if you are that close to the net, why would you opt for some trickshot drop instead of smashing the heck out of the ball???

Do you have a two handed backhand? If so you can learn to hit your drop shots with both hands like Melzer! :)

Are you talking about a backhand drop shot or a forehand drop shot? and do you have a 2hbh or a ohbh?

i sometimes will wind up for a short sitting duck forehand and then at the last second, change grip back to continental and hit the droppa!!

I agree, many players are capable of smashing the ball hard enough to send it over the fence in a recreational court (Maybe not courts used in tournaments or anything..). I'd rather launch it. Hey but it must feel awesome to get the fake drop to work.

I have a 2HBH, and I'm working on developing my 1HBH right now. Wanna know what sucks? I just got my racquet restrung today, and I set the tension at 65 lbs instead of my normal 62 lbs. The lack of ball pocketing/trampoline effect made EVERY single attempt at my drop shots hit the white tape on the net, and I'm not even exaggerating. It felt really bad, and I wanted to just cry

Both FH/BH, but PARTICULARLY the BH. As stated above in the previous quote reply, I mainly use 2H but I am developing a 1H.
epic drop shot.

I've seen the PoT live action so many times to just analyze how STUPID it is.
1. Their footwork just looks REALLY wonky.
2. What ball emits smoke, especially when its not even going so fast/spinning so hard?
3. Tezuka zone- How can there be a universal spin that will always return to you regardless of what you do?
4. Zero Shiki Drop shot - Look at his STANCE. He moved the racquet about half a foot, how are you supposed to be able to get massive backspin with that? Also, how do you get a ball to defy the laws of physics for no bounce like that?
5. I want Yonex socks
6. Apparently the shot hit to Tezuka right before the zero shiki took about 9 seconds to reach him. Ooook
7. Hakugei - How can the measly backspin imparted by a BH slice make the ball rise vertically 90 degrees with like, 5 mph wind? -.-
8. Boomerang snake - I want to see the man who can create enough sidespin with a regular buggy whip shot/reverse forehand to make it go around the pole -.-
9. Twist Serve - I want a twist serve that breaks 90 degrees -.-
10. Apparently Tennis Killed the Dinosaurs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuaLePAwFCw&feature=related)
11. PoT is very unrealistic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgoMia_os7w&feature=related)
12. I can keep going but I've already made myself look like a nerd. I don't need any more nerdiness

I don't bother disguising it. The spin kills them anyway.

You need a generous amount of spiral spin in addition to the side spin to pull off these shots; sidespin alone will not do it.

Actually, to hit an effective Twist serve, you must employ some of that spiral spin in order to get the ball to kick to the side, side spin won't do it. Hitting a topspin groundstroke somewhat to the outside of the ball can generate a bit of spiral spin as well -- of course, you won't won't get those ridiculous PoT bounces tho'. Some underhand, underspin groundstrokes that bounce dramatically to the side involve a generous an mount of spiral spin.

Noo, you misunderstand! I already know the concept of the twist serve and stuff, with the spiral spin and stuff!!! And the twist-groundstrokes and stuff. Remember, I started that twist serve thread a long time ago that you and Bungalo generously helped me out on? I can do a twist serve already.
I was saying, I wish I could have a twist serve that could break over 90 degrees (like PoT style). :)

Using a drop shot with your forehand is basically telling your opponent to hightail it to the net. I use the drop only on the backhand. Also, learn to rotate the waist without moving the arm. Great disguise.
