How common is the one-handed backhand among junior players?

In two years of watching sectional and national girls 12-16 play, I could count the number I've seen on one hand.

Guys, a few more. But still, not many. What do some others think? Two percent?

I haven't seen many juniors playing with one-handed backhands.Two-hander s are way more common.

I play number one for my high school and in our conference, a strong one, i think two out of the five number 1's had them. And those two were actually the best in the conference. However, i do not see that many, in high school or tournament play.

To answer the OP, Not very. The way I see it, kids are more prone to 2 handers because it's easier and less of a weakness when they're young.

Just like I said, when you're young, you're weaker (wrists) so you revert to using two hands to support yourself. Once you get into the 16's 18's your physically stronger and therefore more able to handle it.

Not everybody has pictures up so can't say for sure, but it appears there are only 2 players in the tennisrecruiting.net Top 50 that have a one-hander: Lipman and Lippert.

Saw about 5 or 6 guys in the boys 18s at Winter Nats, about the same in the boys 16. Didn't see everybody play. Just a guess, but I'd say around 5%

What junior you talking about?
Are we talking about Girls 10's? Mostly two handers.
Are we talking about Boys 18, top level Nationally, then about 3/4 two handers.
And if you're considering a composite of all US Junior players, easily 90% two handed backhands.

I think that the WTA is becoming very very stereotyped...I'm the only player at my club who has a consistent one-hander and who can get topspin on it.

There are plenty of players I know who use a one-hander, but that's just me. I find that people who have one handers, generally, are either really bad or really good.

It's rare to see that nowadays. Too bad. But as long as the kids enjoy playing tennis, either 1 or 2 hbh, then I guess it doesn't really matter how they hit their backhands.

I'm only a top 150 junior in MO Valley, I've only played 6 USTA tourneys ever, and I can say I'm legitimately one of two players with a one-handed backhand... The other was a lefty and his game was completely self-taught (really nice guy, and he had technically correct strokes too).

In the southern section B16s top 100 only 6 players use a one handed backhand..2 of whom are in top 10 and 2 in top 50..other is in the 70s

When you think of the best backhands in the game, you only think about one-handed players: Edberg, Guga, Gasquet, Gaudio, Rosewall...Henin. The only 2-hander I think about is Safin.

A group of coaches convinced my son to switch to a one-handed back hand when he was about 13...I never quite figured out why but I trusted them. He really struggled with it for more than a year...everyone who played him knew it was his weakness and went for it. I tried to get him to go back to a two handed during that period but he said he really wanted to develop it...well, 3 years later it is actually working for him but it was a long road.

I guess if you start with it, it is better than switching; however, if he was to do it over again, I never would have had him switch...to much of a learning curve deficit than a benefit to his game.

Last year i played 9 or 10 tournaments and saw 2 players with a 1handed backhand. Funnily, they were both in the same tournament.

7 of the top 100 in the Boys 18s in the Southwest, 5 of whom are top 25, one top 10.

In the Boys 16s, only 4, three of whom are in the 7 listed above. All 4 are top 25.

train if you knew nything bout college tenis you would know gustavus adolphus has one of the most acknowledged d3 programs in the country. he played 2 singles there and trnsfered to lawrence becuase the schooling was better. his stuffs prettier than fedexs. mine isnnt bad either ;)

sorry bud i only know about legit schools cause i live in the south not too many lawrence univesities or gustavases, all i know of is rollins and mary washington...and d3, um I used to hit with a player who plays #3 (give or take 1 spot) at Mary Washington which was top 10 a year ago, idk what they are now..but i beat him right before he left for college and he played top 6 and up to #2 his freshman year...i might add i was in 8th grade when i beat him...so in conclusion you don't know anything about tennis or backhands...oh and im sure lawrence university in wisconsin has great academics, i've deffinetely heard of it.
