The weather sure turned this tournament into a mess. Entire draws collapsed. Hundreds of defaults (emerg, ill, inj).

Skewed results that will affect rankings.

the kids that stayed were most likely all homeschooled kids or academy kids..all the kids I know who goes to regular school defaulted ...
they should have started this tournament on Jan 1 ... what's the big deal? it's not like Christmas, plus most of the kids were already there by then..
I would say it's a good tournament improve on your Nat'l rankings but the quality of play was well below a lot of Nat'l level II I've seen...

I doubt the weather played that big a part. The main issue w/ the Copper Bowl, in recent years, has been with relation to timing. Initially, kids look at it as a way to play 2 national tourneys in 2 weeks with hardly any extra travel.

However, when kids go out early in the Winter Nats, parents often don't want to foot the bill to hang around for nearly a full week. Similarly, those kids that make it quite far in the Winter Nats often claim they're too fatigued to play another tourney.

This is nothing new. Three years ago, a friend of my son was #92 on the alternate list. He got in the main draw, partly because so many dropped out and partly because they drop out at the last minute so local kids are more likely to accept a position when called by Dickinson. If Dickinson calls an alternate in some other state the day before the tourney, chances are that person will opt not to play unless they're already in AZ for vacation.

It generally hasn't rained here during the Copper Bowl, too often...usually there's more rain during the Winter Nats. At Copper Bowl, during recent years they've had to delay match start times due to cold. 2 years ago, kids were playing 8:00 a.m. matches in 27 degree weather.
