Does federer have a loop or pendulum backswing or backhand. Or in the middle. Please watch.
It looks like neither of them. It seems like he lift it slowly straight up then when he wants to bring it down behind his back, he does a little loop. (at least from the vids on youtube)
Thanks in Advance

Federer uses the smile pattern, or the pendulum as you call it.

If it is a pendulum, it must be very suttle because Blake uses the smile and there you can easily see it. from the vids on YouTube it looks like Federer brings that racket back with the shoulder turn and not the arm like Gasquet does. Check it out. it looks like a straight line to the top

From my observation, it depends on where he's hitting the ball at. (way behind baseline, in the frontcourt, a short ball, ball near his shins or near his shoulder etc.)

I don't think you should focus on the exact shape. Simplicity is the key for the one handed backhand. I wouldn't worry too much about making a smile as long as you take the racquet back with your body and minimize the excess movement of the hitting hand.

A loop....

You could argue that his style is a combination of the two. He definitely doesn't have a big loop like Gasquet, but he usually does a little loop at the end of his backswing. His hand drops slightly as it loads to come forward.

Federer does not use a loop.

Seems more like a square to me

It looks linear.

I argue that it's still a loop - albeit an oblong one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTyyITw-fyo Comparing it to Jame's backhand, the takeback is nowhere near as linear. Conversely, Federer doesn't loop it from high around the shoulders as Gasquet does. Gasquet = shoulders Federer = chest Blake = mid-stomach.

It looks linear.

Exactly. That's the way it should be. Simple and effective. If you look closely though you can see a slight smile pattern in it as he takes the racquet back a little farther with his arm after coiling his shoulders.

if you look very colsely federer hand makes a compact loop mid chest as noted . gasget makes an exagerated loop shoulder high. blake more pendulum

Federer uses a smile pattern. Blake uses a more shallow smile pattern. Both hand patterns are virtually the same.
