I'm in a dilemma I have been playing tennis for 4-5 years and for about 2 years ive been playing every day for 3 hours im 12 right now and i want to quit tennis. My parents don't force me to play and don't care if i do good or not. But, if i quit i would be one of those dweebs that dont play sports so what should i do:confused::confused::confused:

No point in asking us, it's totally your decision, which probably with affect your life. Who cares if your a dweeb, either be a smart one, or go play another sport. Looking from how much you play every day it looks like your into the sport, but i guess not. Like i said, your decision to make, not ours.

What happened to that sponsorship?

Not to be mean, but I honestly couldn't care less if someone I knew wanted to quit tennis. More court time for me

EDIT: Btw, I think you're a squared dweeb for
1) Being twelve (instantly qualifies)
2) For making your forum name "IMSPONSOREDBYDUNLOP"

Might as well keep playing, you're a dweeb either way. It's not as if recreational tennis players garner a ton of admiration anyways

If you enjoy tennis, you wouldn't quit. So do you enjoy playing tennis?

So what? Even if you were a 200 lb 12 year old we wouldn't judge you any differently.

I went through the same thing when I was 12, believe me when I say, you'll come crawling back to tennis.

Well..... We have an age difference, but Ik what you're going through..... I recent quit dancing even though I've been doing it for three years..... Honestly it's basically up to you and what your priorities are..... What do you want out of life? You've been playing for 4-5 years, it might be time to try something new. Consider dancing, theatre, singing or something along those lines I suppose. You're young, so you have time to find out what you like..... You might find you miss tennis and eventually come back, but it's also nice to try something new once in a while

So quit tennis. You don't get any decent exercise from playing anyways, i think it's about 400 calories burnt per set of singles?

It's not complicated.

I posted this on the "jan silva" thread. I thought I would add to it.

You quit a "job". Sounds like tennis has become a job to you. If it feels like going to a job or school or doing chores around the house, then you need a well deserved vacation.

Remind your parents that you are 12 and a couple of weeks or months off will not mean much in the long run. Take some time off, when YOU miss playing so much you can't stand it anymore then get back on the court.

BTW; It is clear by the amount of time on the court and tournaments you say you play that your parents are pushing you. Otherwise there isn't a 12 year old in the world that would know what it takes to win tennis tournaments.

If you are worried about your weight then take up a similar sport, Lacrosse, Volleyball, are both great cross sports for tennis and a lot of fun as well.

Maybe you can take up free running or martial arts(lots of fun but requires lots of training). I know someone who couldn't play any sports when he was young, so he took up martial arts and gymnastic classes. Now he's a stunt performer for movies.

God you guys are being tough on him. Take it a little easier. He's 12, not one of these punk 17 year olds with big mouths that run around on these boards.

Sponsored, let me guess... you're in 6th/7th grade? You're still pretty young, and I can definitely understand how you feel about tennis at the moment. even if you weren't playing as much as you say you do (and for how long you have) it would be pretty normal that you could get sick of it for a while at your age.

I can still manage to remember what it was like being 12 (you're makin' me feel old here, buddy) and from what I recall a lot changed. There was just so much more to do when I got there. If it's a fade in your interest, it makes sense. If you're just sick of all the tennis all the time, that makes sense, too.

My advice: take a break if you really think you need it. It's pretty likely that you wouldn't be able to improve and develop as a tennis player if you don't have the fire in it anymore.

Explore your other interests, take some time off, and wait for the "spark" to come back. If it took you even 6 or so months, you wouldn't lose TOO much. In fact, you may even gain in different ways.

Good luck.

Dancing isn't always ballet or ballroom dancing, which are both highly respected  There was a thread last year that was something like, what would the top pros do if they weren't tennis players.
Roger Federer- Ballroom dancer
Dancing also is crazy hard, and requires a lot of dedication and practice. If everyone could glide and pop like Michael Jackson, do you think he'd be as popular as he was?
People diss tennis for being a pansy sport, but don't sink down to their level. Tennis players are too sophisticated for that.

take a week off, see how you feel. if you think you need more time, take another week off. keep taking weeks off until you wanna play. but you HAVE to take WEEKS at a time off, not just a week, then a day of hitting, then another week, itll just make you feel the same. takin time off will either make you want it more, or itll make you quit, so you'll have your answer either way

That sentense is pretty much your answer

Take a break from Tennis, if you don't miss it or never get the urge to have a hit...then stop. No point playing a sport that you don't want to play

All the best mate. Hope you find the right sport for you :)

I usually refrain from advising people on questions like this, as they are important, and you should really talk to them with people who care about you (parents, friends, family). No offense to the people on this board, but they have no investment in whether or not your are happy, thus I would take any advice you receive with a large grain of salt including mine. The people who know you will give you advice with much greater meaning. Although I will say, some posters do genuinely care about your predicament.

I would suggest taking some time off, not permanently, but just to see you feel while not playing tennis. Check out some other sports, other hobbies, talk to your friends and family.

There is no reason why you have to make one big decision, you can test things out rather than doing something drastic. Leaving tennis for 2 or 4 or 6 weeks might be the break you need to reevaluate what you want to do, and how much time you want to put into tennis, if any time at all.

Doing it this way will allow you to get back in the gram if you want, and then you wont regret any decision you made, as you will have given yourself time to think about it.

Good luck to you.

if uve been playing tennis everyday for hours and hours for years i think any person would get burnt out and start getting tired of it. i mean even pros have their moments of wanting to take off from it.

if ure 12 be a 12 year old kid. go out and enjoy time with ure friends and go play video games with ure buddies. if u like being a normal kid without having all that weight on ure shoulder from the training and practices then maybe its good u take some time off. like u said before, if u end up wanting to play again then thats awesome.

theres so many other sports out there and i guess because u started off with tennis, u feel obligated to stay with it. u dont want to look back at ure life later on and think "i wish i did this instead." so try everything u can while u are still young so u dont have any regrets.

be a kid. have fun dude!

TennisCoachFLA

My guess is there is more to the story. When an adult wants to 'move to a new area' they are usually effected by something besides the area, and whatever underlying issues they are moving from usually follow. When a kid wants to quit a sport, same deal, what else is going on?

Peer pressure?... quitting or not quitting tennis won't change that. A kid sensitive to peer pressure will be manipulated no matter what things they are into. Depression over other things?....quitting won't change that. Looking for attention by making a melodramatic announcement that you are quitting tennis....again, address the real reasons for that.

If it truly is as simple as just not liking tennis, fine, then the decision is easy. But if not, get some help.

The best advice was just given, talk to adults close to you, parents, coaches, uncle and aunts, whoever. You need confidence so you don't get pulled by peers and you need the advice of adults close to you, not a bunch of us strangers on a forum.

research has shown that all it takes for someone to become an expert in their field is 8 solid years of Good practice. or 10,000 hours. That will train your brain and body to be the best.

And its best to put those 8 years in whilst you are young. Research has also shown that the human brain stops growing brain cells by the age of around 18. Once you past that certain age you will gradually find it harder to learn new things as your brain loses the ability to grow new connections, but is forced to swap and split existing connections.

That is why you are now finding younger and younger people making it pro. Eg chess players. soccer players tiger woods, nba players, Nadal/roddick and everyone else.

So to be the best you need a number of factors, including social support which I haven;t mentioned. What I am saying is that if you manage to stay injury free and you continue playing, you could literally be the best in the world one day. Not everyone is given that opportunity and people who throw it away end up regretting it.

You are young and naive. there is no world in your eyes. the only thing you know at the moment is that you want to stop playing. Give other sports a try why not. you may end up being really good at something else. but I think you have a gift and you shouldn't waste it by diversifying too much and frazzling your time away.

I suggest still play tennis but with aside of something and slowly make the transition. so from 3 hours a day of tennis do. 2 hours a day of tennis and an hour or some other sport you like for example, football or baseball or soccer. Then slowly through out the year make that transition, so after a year youll be at 0 hours of tennis and like 3 hours of soccer

Seriously, if you feel that you don't enjoy playing, then its not for you and you should stop. Otherwise, you should just take a break, that might help get you back to love the sport.

I got bored of it once and in a week I was back on the courts and I had actually improved significantly after a week off I think it's good to have a break every once in a while. When you come back you have a renewed sense of determination and drive to succeed, and a rekindled "fire in the belly." (That's my coaches term for will to win)
