I am just curious if there is anyway that Andy could be the world number 2 if he ends up winning the first slam of 2009. If i remember correctly, he lost early to Tsonga last year so he does not have many points to defend. It obviously depends on how Novak and Roger do but lets just say they both make early exits (highly unlikely of course). Thank you for your responses.

Mathematically impossible.

Mathematically impossible.

How far is novak/federer away from him?

Im sure he could close the gap to about 500 old ranking system points

Murray lost first round to Tsonga last year.

If he wins the AO and Djokovic loses before the semis he's no.3.

Federer currently has 10700 points and Djokovic currently has 10590 points. Murray has 7190 points. Even if both lose in the 1st rd, Murray could not become world #2. However, he could become world #3.

Edit : Ok wait, my math sucks. It's mathematically possible if I read the point system right, but it's highly improbable. As in, extremely highly improbable.

I just recalled federer and djokovic being 10 points apart but forgot they have already played a tournament this year.

Damnit I read it wrong again. Djokovic is defending 2000 points while Federer is defending 900. Murray has literally 0 points to defend. If Djokovic loses before the semis and Murray wins the AO, he becomes world #3. Regardless of what Federer does, he still retains World #2 (if I did my math correctly).

Stupid ATP point system restructuring. Someone may want to check me.

I think Federer is going to come through the draw, not so sure about Djokovic. It's very possible that Murray is #3 after the AO. #2 is much less likely IMO.

i think the number 2 ranking is still safe after the australian open even if federer does not participate or loses in the 1st round. he defends 900 points, so he's left with 9800 points while murray will have 9190 if he wins. the number 3 ranking is in grave danger. joker must reach the semis i think to retain his ranking.

That's what I thought. Even if Federer pulls out / loses 1st rd, Murray is still a clean 600+ points behind Federer.

For sure - I think Murray will surpass Djokovic! May be not in AO but by middle of the year.

Don't forget Sydney. If Djokovic wins there, he gains 250 points and will then need to get to QF to retain #3.

He was asking a question, not throwing a made-up fact.

As Roger said "For me, honestly, ranking two, three, four, five, 25, it doesn't really matter a whole lot, you know. For me it is either number one or being in the main draw,

Doubt it, Murray would have to win it, which right now I am not too sure is happening.

Is this the consensus? I'm just asking because I don't know lol.
