Is anyone here able to hit with more topspin on their backhand? If so, how do you do it?

I guess it could be possible, although its doubtful. Perhaps you have a traditional forehand grip like an continental or eastern-forehand and there isn't much topspin. And the way the players strokes have developed with a eastern-backhand creates more spin.

Perhaps it's more about stroke mechanics of the player rather than the grips (forehand).

Nope, cant even hit close to the same amount of spin on my backhand as my forehand. Then again my backhand sucks balls lol so yeah...

almost as much, but not more

if i hold an extreme grip for my one-handed backhand, I might get close, but my two-handed backhand is nowhere near my forehand topspin capacity.

hey oneguy, you think you'll ever make any vids? Would like to see you play, plus the people here really help you out. I don't mean to pressure you into making a vid, but just wondering if you plan on posting one in the near future.

Methinks the muscles involved in hitting a forehand incur greater racquet head speed.

only people with a continental or eastern forehadn grip could hit a backhand with more spin than with their forehands. and the reason why usually forehands have more spin than backhands is because the acceleration of the wrist is greater in the forehand.

well my bh gets alot more topspin when the ball is above waist hight for me, but not more than FH

I have never uploaded a video to Youtube, but I'll try once I get a video of me hitting. I don't play on weekdays b/c it's the winter and it's so freakin cold so I usually hit on weekends at a club. But sure, I'll try to upload one this month...I won't have any excuses I promise. I'll probably be able to shoot myself hittting next, next weekend. I'll be playing a tournament this weekend.

Alright cool, was just wondering. Youtube isn't hard to work with, it was just finding 2 people to come to the court with me that was hard (need someone to hit with me+film). Posting a vid here helps alot though, you'll get some good tips for sure. Good luck at your tourney too:) I joined USTA a couple months ago and still haven't played any loll, I need to start rollin'

i read somewhere scientific that the backhand is a more natural motion than the forehand. so, it is definitely likely that you could generate more spin on the backhand than the forheand as you're able to swing faster on that side (given that it is more natural)...i do hit with more topsin on my backhand than forehand--even if i take out the grip variable.

that's certainly the case with me, my Bh is so much more consistent, and slight better than my backhand, shorter takeback, and faster swing to to contact, and also easier to deal with high loopy ball than my forehand.

I have more racquet head speed on my 1bh so yes I can generate more spin. Usually, too much because it is a much easier generate speed.

No wrist snap, just the hip snapping and a freer swing because your torso is not in the way, rather it is behind your fulcrum, the shoulder.

I do. Have no clue why, but I definitely have a spinnier BH, than FH.

That's because you need to stop blasting 100 mph FHs Drak. Geez. I told you that already.

I cant hit topspin forehands for my life right now. I barely get any spin on it

I'm with Jason....
All my tennis shelflife, my backhand is not only more consistent, but I can hit it much harder with more swingspeed.
I'm lefty, so that could be confusing to me.
SemiWestern forehand shifted towards full, Eastern backhand shifted towards slightly more......
My forehand often goes really flat, even with full Western. Maybe bad or under torso turn, maybe late prep, maybe semi open stance.
But the backhand doesn't care how I prep. If I want to hit out with top, it does.
Pick on my forehand, and you can all beat me easily.

Nadal has a pretty spinny backhand, but I haven't seen that many one handers with a ton of topspin.

i definitely do, my OHBH has tons of spin (by my standards anyway- it always comes down into the court at least). I use a pretty extreme grip, almost a SW backhand, and it just feels really natural to hit hard on that side and get lots of spin going. my FH i have to slice or pattycake though... :(

I do. My forehand is a little flatter than I would like right now.

I think in general if you have a world class forehand and world class backhand, you will still have more spin on your forehand. It's just the way the mechanics of the stroke works.

It's not that hard to get spin on the backhand, it's the same concept as on the forehand side. Just practice it. And if you want lots and lots of advice on how to do it, just do what Ballinbob said and post a vid.

I usually hit about 50% more topspin on my one-hand backhand than my forehand, and I hit my forehand usually about 30% harder. The timing just seems more critical on the backhand because it's harder to adjust for a last moment mistake in judging the ball by flicking my wrist or altering my stroke, so I play it safer and with more spin.

i get more spin on my back hand than on my forehand by a fair margin. problem is I am right handed but play a BH with left hand at buttcap and right hand above it (basically a lefty two hand forehand). weird I know but wow does it work for crosscourt. onehand backhand has much less spin than my forehand.

Good question. My backhand top spin is much more controlled and consistent than on my forehand. However, I can impart greater topspin on my forehand but I lose some "feel/control". The reason for these differences is that I naturally have a very consistent backhand form from head to toe. If I try to impart greater topspin to my backhand the ball must be below my waist when I strike it for the ball to land it.

Seems like we have a somewhat split decision here.
Results could be askewed by previous injuries or technique issues.
Even with lots of time to prepare super early, on balls hit right into my strike zone, my forehand is pathetic in regards to topspin, pace, consistency, or solid contact. I even close my stance and turn the shoulders really well, and my backhand top is still stronger and more consistent.
Can two collarbone breaks on the left side (hitting side) really affect the stroke?

my 1HBH used to be more spinny but not as much now. however have played a few whose 1HBH was nasty spinny.

Same here. Forehand needs more work. For me, as another poster suggested, it is just because the stroke feel so natural. The FH is not a natural hot (for me), by any stretch of the imagination. I'm also much, much more confident on the BH side. And when it breaks down, I have serious issues since the confidence just goes and affects everything.

I got the impression from the OP that what he wanted to know was if anyone was *able* to hit more top on their backhand than their forehand. I *could* hit more top on my backhand just by hitting flat forehands, but my forehand is able to produce more topspin than my backhand. I've never seen anyone who can actually hit more topspin on their backhand than they can on their forehand. That would be interesting to see if it's possible.

I suspect us duffers who have bad forehands regularly hit more topspin, much more pace, and more consistency with our backhands.
Even knowing the ball is going to forehand, feet turned, racket back, shoulder turned, I can't hit solid forehands compared to bad footwork topspin backhands.
I never said I was good, and claim only 4.0.

P.S. Your backhand is straighter this year, last year you often hit with side/top now it is almost pure top.

Is that something you have changed, or a response to my flatter ball?
