Even though she didn't win the title, she played well....showing much improvement. Her serve has improved and she beat Clijsters and Myskina to get to the final. She should have won the final....she led 6-4,5-3 and in the third led 4-2. I guess her nerves played a HUGE factor in her quest of trying to win the diamond racquet!

Clijsters was in her first tournament in over a year and was very rusty.
Myskina is fading from her dream year of last year, and is not even in the top 6 on a non-clay surface. Mauresmo has still not won a grand slam in her career, has not reached a slam final in SIX YEARS and is a big notch below Serena, Sharapova, and Davenport right now, yet losing to her in three sets is a hugely positive step? It doesnt take much to excite a Venus fan these days, understandably, expectations are much lower now.

OMG. Mauresmo is up there with the top. She just had some mental lapses as of late. However, don't forget she did beat MOLIK IN STRAIGHT SETS on her way, so she picked up her level. Venus was in control the whole time, just lost some focus and got nervous because she was serving for that racquet!

First of all even when Mauresmo was ranked #2 I dont think anybody considered her any better than about the fifth best player in the world. Now she is no longer #2, she is down to #4 below Serena, Davenport, and Sharapova. Almost everybody agrees Serena, Sharapova, and Davenport are the three best players in the world right now. Some might argue Kuznetsova, Henin(although one will have to wait til her comeback to gauge better but won two big events last year unlike Mauresmo), and Dementieva(beat Mauresmo both times they met in slams last year to get to finals)are as good or better than Mauresmo. At the very least a big plateau below the BIG THREE though.

Facts are facts, Mauresmo has still never won a grand slam, and has not reached a slam final in SIX YEARS. Furthermore Maursmo has not even played well so far this year. So if Venus is in such an even match with Mauresmo, and losing it to boot, she has a ways to go to show herself a threat for the very top again since Sharapova, Davenport, and Serena are a huge level about somebody like Mauresmo who was humiliated by Serena in Australia, and split two three-setters with somebody like Safina this year.

So you are saying that you never had an off day? Mauresmo just look like she was off her game a bit the day she played Serena at the Australian. We all have bad days/slumps so I really don't credit that. Mauresmo is a terrific player especially when she is on....If each player was at their best at the top, Venus, Serena, and Sharapova would be top 3, easily

Venus has been doing a lot better lately. From Austrailian Open to present, she has shown that she is able to be a top contender and can compete with the best. 2004 wasn't a good year because of injury, etc, etc. Even though Mauresmo didn't do very well against Serena she did well on her way to the quarterfinals. Venus needs time to come back and I think she is starting to come back. She showed that against Myskina in the semis at Antwerp. Venus is on her way back to the top 5 and being a top contender on the tour.

I am not basing Mauresmo on not having a good year just on her lame performance against Serena in the Australian quarters, but her overall results this year. Three sets with Safina both times they played(one time may be ok but twice in a row no way), getting whooped in a 6-1 second set by Molik yesterday. Just in general watching her play she is struggling so no she has not been in good form this year, yet she and Venus still were toe to toe.

Say what you want but the fact is Serena, Sharapova, and Davenport, are the three best players in the world right now. If you are denying that you are simply denying reality. You have no claim to say Venus is one of the three best right now. She has absolutely no results in the last year to give her that claim.

This is true. Davenport is still on top and Serena is staging a comeback now with her Grand Slam win in Melbourne. Sharapova is consistently winning matches and has a good chance at Roland Garros. Venus is good but she hasn't shown any signs that she is going to go back to the top real soon. If she improves her forehand and serve then she will become a top contender again. But right now, Davenport, Sharapova and Serena have the edge on tour.

Well I agree with what Tracy Austin said, she should go to a specialist to fix the few flawed strokes she currently has, that bring the rest of her game down enough to make a big difference. The Williams are loyal to a fault to one another though, so it is highly unlikely. I couldnt see her undermining her mom to bring in any other coaches, regardless if it was she should do or not.
