Well who do you think it's gonna be this year
I'm rooting for Monfils :)

I'm hoping for Del Potro but that i guess would not to be cazy since he is in the top ten, but he would most likely meet federer in the quarters.

del p for me. i think he will route fed on the way there too!

I would pick Nalbandian, but that would eliminate the chance for Federer to get there. :?

Actually Nadal reaching the finals would be some kind of shock to many posters here, as he has never made it beyond the semis of a HC slam.

Anyone from Rafa's side .

Fed has remarkable consistency. At least semi-finals in how many straight Slams now?!

Marin Cilic also has some confidence going in
he won chennai

Kei Nishikori I think is a good contender

I think this is over with. now people are expecting it so it won't happen... no one was saying "baghdatis" or "tsonga" or even gonzalez, they just took the tourney by storm.

but if anyone could fit this bill it'd be gulbis, no doubt, but I just can't see him stringing 7 wins together. he's never done it before.

sorry to the simon fans but i just dont see him making it past the qtrs this time. his form is questionable coming into the aussie.

Roddick. Everyone thinks hes past his prime, and hes gonna run through to the semis and lose to Fed like always.

No shockers this year, IMO, but if I had to choose one it would be Nalbandian...

Roddick! The way many ppl talk about his game here it'll probably be classified a shock if he reaches the final.

The way Roddick played in the last few grandslams,it would be something normal if he wouldn`t reach second week.

sure you didn't mean christophe rochus ? ;)
sorry to the simon fans but i just dont see him making it past the qtrs this time. his form is questionable coming into the aussie.
mmmh... i don't see him improving his best slam performance (3rd round) either.

by the way, he had some weird comments after his loss to gasquet in sydney. maybe he didn't really mean what he said but he made it sound like he doesn't care so much about this kind of tournament (sydney / hopman cup) and didn't care either to lose to gasquet, because he didn't "really really" wanna win this match, as he used it for trying new strategies...

ok, good to be ambitious, but it sounded a bit ankward towards richard and the tournament, especially for a guy who never did anything big at a slam. :?

(in french, sorry)

disappointing from him : despite finding his game ugly, i thought he had looked like a nice guy so far.

my pick would either be simon or murray. simon has enjoyed a dream season based on his previous standards, but murray has been so dominant already this year. not to mention he has reached the us open final and played in shanghai.

It will be Tipsarevic or Troicki vs Murray or Nadal then.

Why is everyone labeling Murray a surprise finalist? Murray and Federer are the two most anticipated players to reach the finals.

Del Potro and Simon, fairly legit to say they might be shocking but given their rankings I wouldn't call it a "surprise." Remember Tsonga & Gonzalez? They weren't close to top 10 when they made the finals.

Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, Tipsarevic...these are good shock finalists.

I still stay with Gublis as my pick for a shock finalist. He did make the quarters at the French last year, losing to Djokovic. That's a commendable streak. He's one of thsoe players where you would say in retrospect, "Oh he had the ability all along" but you wouldn't pick him to make the finals looking at the first two days of the draw.

Roddick is ranked higher than Del Potro so he wouldn't be a shock either. Safin and Hewitt would be huge surprises but not exactly "shock" factor like Tsonga and Gonzo since they have done it before and are on virtually everyone's radar. For Gulbis people expect him to do big things so the shock value would still be dampened.

Guccione, now there's a good shock pick :). Go the Gooooch.

its either verdasco monfils del potro or simon

Oui, c'est moi.
01-28-2009, 06:01 AM
So Verdasco is the potential AO finalist. Though i think Nadal will defeat him.

When was the last time the suprise finalist at the AO came from Roger's half of the draw?

R_Federer
01-28-2009, 10:01 AM
Told ya'll that a surprise finalist is someone who we dont even talk about. We talk about likes of Simon, Monfils, Del Potro so they dont qualify as "surprise finalists". But Verdasco definitely is...if he wins one more match, which I highly doubt against Nadal!
