I have a question
On what the wrist should be doing on groundstrokes
Do you intentionally lay it back or does the forward momentum of your swing lay it back for you?

Nothing in tennis should be forced. You hit it spot on with your second statement - the forward momentum of your swing lays it back for you.

Keep your wrist still but relaxed.
One day, when you are good enough that you can generate a fast racket head speed, the wrist will be supple enough that it will do the thing that people rave about with Federer. BTW, you probably won't be swinging that fast, so don't expect that much natural wrist movement but it will move a little by itself. Most of the movement will be from forearm suppination or pronation and not from the wrist.
Take away point is you don't try move your wrist to "generate" anything.
