View Full Version : Is tennis health-giving sport ?

I was practicing sports from 10 to 17 years old , then I gave up, smoke a lot. Did almost nothing related with sports. Only from 35 I started again seriously.

When I started first with light racquet Head TI S.6 I got wrist problem, I couldn't lift up a kettle. Then I shifted to i.Prestige Mid. After 4 years of practicing ( 3 times a week per 1 hour each) recently I shifted to PS Tour 90 because of elbow problem. My elbow sometimes hurts me a little, despite I make also very short exercises with dudmb-bells every-day. Somewhen 2 years ago I felt a weakness in my knee. It reminds about itslef very rare, but reminds say once in 3 months.


I'm 39. Of course, I love tennis and can't imagine life without it. But all these rise the question is it helthy sport, is it worth to practice with? Isn't it also bad for heart and for lungs ?

Most people would probably say that playing tennis is good for your health. However, I've known a could of guys that have had strokes right on court. You should check with your doctor if you have health concerns.

Just curious Aykhan, after all those years of activity, what made you want to start the sport again??? And why did you quit?

I wasn't in tennis in young ages, only a few months. I was practicing karate school shotokan like all young boys excited with and imagining themselves heroes.

After I stoped since I entered department of mathematics in university and started practicicng my thoughts and my brain instead of physics, was lasy for sports, smoke a lot and etc. I started tennis in 35 after 1 year after marriage and giving up sigarettes when I started to add also kg-s. I had a little stomach I hated, not so big actually. I choosed tennis since always liked it and also because there is not any other choice actually if to think.

In my age it is late and ridiculous to practice karate and no interest as well as other fightings, wrestlings and etc. I can't gather a team 3 times a week to play football, basketball or any team sports at times when I can play. And singles sports like running, swimming don't attract me since there is not excitement, heat, score with an opponent. What lefts? Tennis, and table tennis.

What? I earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do at 37! You're never too old, well almost. Just gotta' get on the floor and keep that stretch going.

I didn't take up tennis until I was around 45 or so (and it shows). Any activity that requires bursts of speed, such as tennis, have a great potential for injury, especially as we get older. But tennis isn't a contact or collision sport. If you can remain injury-free, tennis is great excercise for the lungs and heart.

Aykhan - There *must* be some fitness/health threads you can read on TW. I recommend you pay good attention to warming up before playing ... and cooling down / stretching after playing. (Too many of my peers [I am 48] stretch only *before* they play. I find that stretching *after* tennis aids my recovery time.)

Note: My coach in Juniors warned me to do some weight training. Way back in the early 70s he knew to tell me my Service motion could tear down my shoulder. I wish I'd listened *then*. Now I train at the gym regularly ... and have no joint dysfunction (like so many of my peers).

Yes. Tennis is a healthful sport. (And anything can be overdone ... even something good for you.) It is especially liked by Cardio-Pulmonary specialists. (I mean, they report tennis is good for the heart & lungs.)

Are you serious? You claim to be a 'Fanatic of Tennis', yet, you started playing again using a light racquet. That gave you problems, and so you switched to an i.prestige mid? Are you crazy?Of course your elbow hurts a little, because you couldn't handle the prestige. Its a very stiff, heavy racquet for someone to use who can't even lift a kettle.

I don't think any doctors would warn you against exercise unless you have some pre-existing medical conditions. Excercise does work the heart and lungs but if its within the range for your the shape your in its a great lifetime sport. The elbow problems you are having are probably related to your raq/ technique not the strain of the game. The head protector is a good raq if your having arm problems and I've heard good things about the new Kennex line for reducing arm problems. Also check your strokes (especially if your hitting a 1handed backhand) by a local teaching pro they can probalby help you find so flaws in your strokes not helping your health.

i would use a light racket at first then go on to a heavier racket just to find my groove. Not a bad idea aykhan.. i say u stick with th lighter racket though if u cant lift a kettle. esp since ur getting older not younger its best to start using lighter rackets that way you wont regret using a heavy racket later on.

Tennis is not only "health-giving", Aykhan, it is LIFE-GIVING. To swing your racquet, just as your ancestors swung the axe, the blade or the mace-aye...it gives LIFE to the blood and the soul man! What is good in life? Tennis. What is good in Tennis? To drive your enemies before you and hear the lamentation of their vi-mun!

No, seriously...anyone who plays fairly high-level club tennis and above must realize that tennis is not necessarily a healthy sport-not in the way that swimming or cycling are. In fact, above the 4.0 level, tennis will BREAK YOU DOWN, rather than build you up if you aren't in good physical condition.

In order to get ANY health benefits from tennis at your age and above the 4.0 level, you HAVE to come on the court with some degree of decent fitness in the first place. Otherwise, trying to "play yourself into shape" will result in injuries-mostly nagging, non-serious, but still debilitating, which in turn will lead to the types of stress injuries that end in operations-on knees, the back, wrists, elbow, etc. So, to obtain ANY type of health benefits (other than mental) from tennis, make sure that you are in good physical condition before you even step on to the court.
