My parents and my sponsors have agreed for me to do this Tennis Europe thing, I play 4 ITF tournaments and stay for a whole month and I'm going to be on the Spain's team, my parents had a talk with the people and apparently I'm going in the summer and it's going to be on my birthday, I have a few questions. How much money do I need to bring for Euros? How much is Euros in American money? and I hear Spain speaks a different dialect in Spanish, is it still Spanish that they speak or another type of Spanish?

Alll i know is that €1 is £0.93, so probably around $1.70 or something. They speak Spanish, but i guess small towns have their own dialect. Maybe some speak Catalan (whatever that is!)

Thank you for telling me, hope this info is correct.

And yes I'm good enough to play ITF's, why would you ask such a stupid question? I wouldn't have a sponsor if I sucked, would I?

XE.com is your best friend if you want money conversion. And on the language question, if you go to Barcelona then they may speak catalan but everywhere else it should be the same but I'm not sure

You need to talk to the organizers about how much money you need to bring and also the best method (credit card and cash). You'll also want to sort out if you plan to use a mobile phone.

I'm not sure that you will be playing ITFs or just federaration sanctioned tournaments so keep that in mind. If ITF rankings are important to you, you need to verify what tournaments you are playing.

There are languages other than Spanish in different regions of Spain. These are not dialects of Spanish, they are different languages and cultures. Most likely you will encounter Catalan, which is spoken in the areas in and around Barcelona as well as parts of southern France and Andorra. Basque is another possibility if you go in the other direction. However in those regions most people will also speak Spanish. The Spanish is different than latinamerican Spanish (what you hear in Florida) but if you speak that you will get by. People are VERY nice in Spain.

Is this some kind of ploy to get money? My brothers get these all the time in the mail...you get to travel over seas to play tournaments...the only catch is that it costs a few thousand dollars.

I don't want to be harsh, but if you are having trouble beating players in Florida...it is not going to get any easier playing in Europe. You could save a lot more money playing in Florida, or spend that money training at an academy.

Are they covering the cost of your trip as far as travel is concerned, or are you paying for everything?

He might be making this all up. He can barely ever win a match in a low level Florida tournament, Sorry to be harsh, but i'm sick of people like this on these boards.

I went to TennisEurope last year playing junior tournaments, and I think 1 ITF tournament in which I lost first round 2 and 4. It lasted a whole month, visiting Brussels, Paris, and Barcelona. Pretty good experience.

Jackie Stephens: is that your profile? You have said elsewhere you are ITF ranked.....

Either way, please ensure you meet the entry criteria for the ITF tournaments before you make the trip. The European tournaments are unlikely to care about your US national ranking.

Your sponsors should be able to give you all the information you need. Since you are going in the summer, the exchange rate maybe very different from now.

A question though, if you are American (I am assuming), why would you play on Spain's team?

Just read the other thread you referred to. This is all a bit sad really. It's good that Jackie eschews anonymity but he surely must realise you can't do this and bull - **** about sponsors, Spanish teams and having an ITF ranking.

I looked into this tennis europe thing and basically its a summer trip to Europe with tennis. The various trips (tours really) have names such as Team Spain or whatever. They take kids of all ranking levels so it doesnt appear that they are playing any ITFs. It looks rather fun but expensive. If it were me I'd rather my parents bank the $8K for later trips and I'd just train and play local tournaments both juniors and open, especially for this kid since he lives in FL with good competition and training opportunities.

You are absolutely right. Jackie, you live in Florida, lots of good tennis around. If it is tennis you are going to Europe for, you should reconsider. If it is sightseeing and the experience of playing outside of US, then, by all means.

This Tennis Europe brochure is sent out to everyone. The company that runs these trips is based in Connecticut, they actually do a very good job and run fun trips. It is rather costly, as there are no sponsors (like you mentioned) and basically if you can afford it, you are in.

That $8K could last a long time travelling during the summers at college. So many juniors need to think long term with how they spend their money. I'm with you, if its about the culture and travel, go for it, but for tennis, better off in FL and saving that money for later, especially if he does turn out to be good. I can't think of any player I know over 25 who wishes they didnt have some extra cash when they were trying to play after being out on their own.

You are absolutely right, they do not care about your US ranking, or any ranking for that matter. The only requirement is.... willingness to dish out 6-8 thousand USD for 2-3 weeks of real fun. It is a great social event, has very little to do with bettering your tennis skills, however.

Like I said before, fun and games in Europe, why not take a ride if you have the dough.

Stephens on tennisrecruitng and if it could possibly be the wrong one you've never even played a tournament.

Spanish in Spain is pure. It's the home of all other spanish-speaking nations. You'll probably be exposed mostly to Castilian. Castille is a region of Spain. Castellano...

I use to live in Seville, Spain. La gente de espana son orgulloso, con dignidad.

To speak Castellano, you'll need to learn how do drool with style. Just wipe it from the sides of your mouth & keep on. It's almost like a lisp.

I highly recommend that you visit the tapa bars, the discos (hopefully they're called something else by now) and all Moorish museums or sites. Try to visit any roman ruins you can find. Visiting old catholic stuff is kind of boring -- very black/dark, but artful.

You'll probably be playing on a lot of clay. Summer in Spain is not fun. Pretty much the cities evacuate for 2 months. Siesta lasts 3 - 5 hours. 4 rush hours per day. Dinner is never served before 10PM. Never miss merienda.

is that a joke. Wow you're top 400 in Florida. There's only about 450 ranked players in Florida in Boys 16's. Since when has top 400 in Florida been good enough to be fully sponsored and able to play itf's?
