Today, I played a match against the 3rd seed at an L5 tournament and my opponent's only problem was his parents. When the match started, his mom would cheer really loudly when I made an error. She would frequently yell something out when I was serving which made the tournament director come over and tell her to be quiet when I'm serving. Again she would frequently cheer on my errors, but then her little kid claimed "I think Dill's gonna beat this Chinese kid, so let's go to Walgreens" I was offended by this but thankfully they left. That's when the real drama started. It seemed like the mom phoned the dad to come and watch this match and he came in about 10 mins.
The Dad was no better. As soon as he came, he exclaimed, "Dill's playing a Chinese guy too?" Again I was offended. A few games later, I heard the dad say to my opponent, "This guy takes too many bounces on his serve. I think he's taking too long. Do you want me to call the TD? To which my opponent, said, "Dad why don't you go away." In a game where it was deuce I accidentally was about to serve to the ad side, to which the dad said to me in that slow load voice as if I was incompetent in English "It's deuce, you serve to the deuce court, OK?" Then he looks at someone and nods his head side to side.
By this point I was extremely aggravated and then in the second set I was about to serve, when he exclaimed "foot fault!"
That's when I popped. I turned around said "Can you shut up you fool?"
He had a blank look on his face and from then on everything went smoothly.
Do you think what I said was out of line?

You might get a kick out of this article. I like the part where a young Andy Murray hits a ball towards the annoying parent!

God tennis parents are so annoying. I'm glad my parents are supportive but don't interfere with my tennis. I've seen some damn annoying parents in my time.

agreed! You had the right & the responsibility to the sport to report the problem to the tournament director. You can always ask to have the person removed. Anyone attempting to intimidate or influence the match can be removed.
As for the "chineese kid" comments, that's absolutely crap! That definitely should have gone to the TD.
Sounds like the kid is mortified about his parents' behavior. Soon enough he & the spectators will set them straight.

Do you think what I said was out of line?
NO WAY! WHAT YOU DID WAS AWESOME AND FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF THE OTHER PLAYERS "DILL" IS GOING TO PLAY!
If some of the parents across the US whose kids are getting harassed on court by their opponents or parents of their opponents
would grow some freaking guts or courage or whatever you want to call it and STAND UP for their kids, the nation's junior tennis community would not have to put up with this kind of absurd behavior that you had to endure today...........

Alright, next time something like this happens I'll immediately call the td. Again this kid was decent and good mannered, it was just the parents that were getting to me.

i would use the insults or whatever you think it is and work off it let it drive you , let it fire you up and at the end of the match thank them for bringing their kid to play and tell them it was and honor!! no td needed unless they start making threats. best of luck if it happens again!

No way! I wish more people like you put crazed tennis parents in their place by saying things like that. Ugh, I don't understand why people act that way...it's so annoying and disrespectful. Poor kid, I would be mortified if my parents ever acted that way when I was playing USTA tennis (I'm not now, too old lol).

you did the right thing. i had a similar experience over the summer except the kid was in on it too. they cheered all of my ue's and were heckling me. the kid was also blatenly cheating. the td came over and all of a sudden it was a normal tennis match. i still lost though but almost came back 6-3 1-6 10-4. the 10 point tiebrake killed me

Why in the world would you be offended by that?
You're way too thin skinned if you find that "offensive".
If they called you "the guy with the blue shorts", would that offend you?
If not, then you have absolutely no reason in the world to be offended by being referred to as you were, as it is no different. They were simply identifying you
I hope you're not going to come back with this 'Chinese-American' politically correct crap.
Please don't.
As for the other things the two parents did - they were certainly way out of line, and definitely should not have been within a half mile of that match.
You did well to tell him to shut up. People like that are generally that way because people DON'T tell them to shut up. That's likely why he stopped when you told him to - he was shocked that someone actually told him what's what.
But, geez... don't let being called Chinese bother you... that's just silly.

lol you'll be amaze when I tell you this.
Anyway I got into the quarters in the ITF Brunei Single. Well since I had a language barrier (Maylaysian) This once parent was coach his son. Anyways after the first set the Tourament Director came out and told them to be quiet. I won the first set 6-3 however the second when to a tiebreak. So when it was 6-6 5-4 tiebreak his dad ,during my serve, yelled "FOOT FAULT" Next point I serve it right at his son !!^^

I would have said something like "Dude, do you know what the Chinese Triads are ? Cause you're gonna find out pretty soon...." Just kidding, but this reminds me of a funny story, when I first met my mother in law, she was talking to me in "pidgen" English...saying things like "You likee Texas ? You likee weather..."

You had every right to stand up for yourself. Get a tournament official first and if that does not work or the official leaves you have to confront the parents. Who knows, you could potentially psyche out your opponent when he sees that you are mentally strong enough to confront his parents.
