I have a hard time keeping lobs in the court when I play against people with big overheads. Even when I have the time--- I hit long. Help.

Lots of topspin helps.

Look up anything on moonshots. They are very effective especially since the topspin makes it drop short of the baseline and make an easy point.

close a little bit the racket face at contact
relax your wrist in order to get a lashing down-up motion on the back of the ball

Most people I see don't hit them high enough and don't commit fully to the shot in order to give it that topspin it needs, as Papa points out. I suggest you use a SW or Western grip, hit with a semi-open stance, hit strongly UP through the ball with a FULL follow through, and try hitting a little bit off your back foot instead of stepping into it as with a groundstroke to kill some of the forward weight transfer. I hit lots of lobs, but mainly Xcourt and not d-t-l, there is more room to get it in.

On the other hand - lobbing a tall opponent with a big overhead may not be the best choice unless they are really hugging the net. My mixed partner get 90 % of the lobs people try on him (one thing I really like about him :-)). He is just hard to lob.
