I started this poll but misplaced in it the parent Racquest section. See below link if your interested in viewing results, adding to the poll, and/or commenting:

no, it's actually quite depressing, the borg pro is being beaten to shreds, it baffles me....???????

Well if you find that baffling, the Maxply isn't winning???

Guessing because this is mainly being voted by the great U.S public and the Greatest wooden stick ever is missing out because it's British!!!

My personnel favourite is the wood/graphite composite Head Vector, what a racquet that is:) It's basically a bigger heavier Vilas, and such a great racquet:):)

Its a great looking woody and played by one of the greatest players ever but not soo easy to play, which is what this poll is all about. It has a smaller sweetspot than the wilsons but not as small as the head vilas. The Vilas is one of the most challenging wood rackets that I have played.

I thought the maxply fort was hard to play with I checked one out when I was a kid and thought it had a small sweetspot and mostly dead when the ball was struck just slightly outside of it and I saw many of them break at the top of the throat. some of the kids who I played with growing up used them ant that happened quite a bit, they liked them nevertheless.

Back in 1979, I opened tennis magazine and saw ad for mostly wood rackets TAD Davis, Futabaya, Rossignol...

DId Bancroft wood rackets ever sold in USA?

Yes, Bancrofts were made, sold, and played in the US and abroad. Infact, the story with the Bancroft Borg Personal is that Bjorn was contracted to use them in the US only by Bancroft and used the Donnay Borg Pro models everywhere else. What a difference between those models, even though his rackets were highly customized from the store versions.

Borg looks more comfortable with the Bancroft, how do the two compare? I remember the allwood was available but never the borg pro. They were the last woodies on the shelf before the 80's graphite renaissance, and subsequent post apocaplyptic toxic sweatshop widebody racquet epidemic that was the 90's and beyond...

Can someone please tell me about the Rossignol Strato? Thanks!

STRATO is one of the best looking wood racquets, i only have 3 wood (my 1915 thomas wilson skokie-staff, my new Regent and my trusted donnay allwood), the strato, donnay alwood and the garcia look badass...pushing the envelope past convention, making you think that they had some unique properties because of their design or finish...

The Strato was a paintjobbed Garcia - almost positive.

How does it play? My experience with wood racquets isn't as extensive as other posters but I've played with more of the wood hybrids such as Head Edgewood and PK Golden Ace and of course the Kramer Pro Staff and Maxply Fort.

Was that used by Jose Luis Clerc and Virginia Ruzici?

yes it was Clerc played a paint job of the strato to look like a kennex racket ; seems like he never "got" the feel of the Golden Ace. the strato was a paint job of the Garcia Cragin or I should say they took over the brand. pretty sure.

I've got a Strato - will add this to my "to do" list. I have a Garcia too but not that one - mine is the Continental 3000, also a great frame though.

Stellar Centre-Court.

Not sure of the actual dates but it was used by Pat Cash during his first year or two on the circuit and while becoming the #1 junior in the world.

Might be my university account having some block to the outgoing messages (possibly one I haven't bothered to lift). I'll try another from a standard hotmail and see how it goes.

Thanks.

Never does things by halves, does our Stevie! Great pics as usual!

I have this racquet - actually bought two, in mint condition, for a very decent price, but gave one to a good friend - simply beautiful.

Thanks! It plays wonderfully, too. I peeled the head tape off for the pics... gotta put some more back on before I play again :)

How much does it weight and balance?

Alright, I figured I'd post this here, but what stock strings come with the Maxply Fort? It seems to be a sort of nylon with blue spiral; it's turned into a shade of yellow and I'm wondering if I should restring the racquet.

The grip size is 4 1/2M

It's 14.3 oz. (405 grams) and 4 pts. HL stock.

Actually, you have identified them correctly--blue spiral nylon--a very common inexpensive string back in the day. Many racquets came pre-strung with that or something similar. If you really wish to enjoy hitting with the Dunlop and it is in good enough shape for re-stringning, put in a thin gauge gut or a good soft multi (e.g., Techifibre, NXT, etc.). Have fun.

This brings memories. I had the Strata and the Maxply both. I still preferred the Wilson Advantage. The Jack Kramer was pretty good too.

Of course, these rackets, having such small heads, can only be at their best using VS 16g gut.

Bud, first off beautiful racquet! :) Did you buy that off TW's Bosworth collection? I know they had them awhile back and I kick myself for not getting one.

Thanks. I think I will restring it with 17g Powerfibre. It's a soft string with good pop. Will probably go with 40 lbs; 2-piece job.
