... but not to play! He was supposedly there just to attend the players' party.. Wonder if there is some ulterior motive is behind all this (I'm still a staunch Fed fan).

Not really. The low is around 19 C, but maybe the dry cold makes it a little nippy?

Fed does have a home in Dubai, he was also scheduled to do some promotional work there, and he also does most of his heavy training in the Dubai heat.

Cheers, TennezSport

He's doing the rehab on his back there. Showing up at this party was like a trip to the grocery store for him.

He's there to collect some of his appearance fee and for goodwill to help him collect big appearance fees in future years.

1. Money - he gets paid for it.
2. He lives in the Democratic Republic (NOT) of Dubai - he shares the same values with those guys.

Andy: "Ahhh.....I can tell ya but then I'll have to kill ya."

Andy: "Ahhh.....I can tell ya but then I'll have to kill ya."

Roger: Oh, you don't have to. I've just applied to WTA for membership to be in my normal environment of cry babies and drama queens.

Andy: Ahhhh .... you donna need the secret. When ya female status is formally confirmed, you can ask Rafa to marry you ..

Roger: Will he?

Andy: He screwed you so many times that like an honest guy he'll have to.
Ha ha ha. That was fun...

I think Roger has damaged his image to Nadal fans much more by crying that actually losing the match.

People already forgot the brilliant shots that he made till 4 sets. Many rallies he won, many winners he hit. One shouldn't forget those.

As for taking rest, it's a good decision that he wants to strengthen his back so that he is fully prepared for Masters series and the Slams afterward. If you want to contest for slams, you better be 100%.

According to WTA rules for 2009, players who should be playing but had to withdraw due to injury are to be at the tournament or in the immediate area regardless, working to promote the event. We haven't seen the ATP rules yet, but the type of appearance like Federer's at Dubai will become routine.

And here I thought Nadal was supposedly a great player? Yet it looks like he won all his slams outside one(FO 2005)beating a WTA player in the final according to Nadal fans here? He's a one slam wonder then as his only slam that counts is FO 2005(he beat a real man Puerta in that one).Don't you dare mention him in the same sentence as Borg then,he's just another Gaudio. He's also just a claycourt specialist as his AO and Wimbledon titles don't count as well according to you and here I thought that Nadal is an all-surface player.

Oh don't be so sexist! :p

He has a residence there and trains there. He is also on the player's council so he needs to keep in touch with them informally.

It's not about being sexist it's just that ATP tour has always been played on a higher level of tennis than WTA(a fact)so Nadal can't be held in the same regards as past tennis greats given that according to his own fans he didn't beat an ATP player in the final in all but one of his 6 slams,he even lost 2 slam finals to the aforementioned crying WTA player which is quite embarrasing,I mean can you imagine for example Sampras losing a Wimbledon final to Steffi Graf?

Therefore the only slam title which truly counts for Nadal in comparison to past greats is the one in which he beat a legitimate ATP player(like past greats did in each of their slams)in the finaland that's his 2005 FO final win against a legitimate ATP player-Puerta.

Therefore according to his own fans,Nadal is a one slam wonder and merely a claycourter(not a great all-surface player).

Putting down Roger puts down Rafa and vice versa at times as well. I get that. I was just trying to make a joke out of the situation. A lame one I guess.

folks here might want to check out peter bodo's article on fed today called "stages of great" at www.tennis.com he really goes in depth as to where he thinks fed might be right now in his career...as much a psychological profile as an x's and o's thing...i'm sure it will get more debate going

"To my mind, this is the big if most speculative one. For the second year in a row, Federer lost at the Australian Open, and for the second year in a row an injury/illness narrative has slowly emerged, and taken on a life of its own. And it has emerged long enough after the event to shield Federer from being accused of excuse-making, but soon enough to be absorbed into the conventional wisdom. I'm not saying this is spin, but I am saying that if you wanted to spin the losses, you couldn't do it in a better, more artful way."

Basically, what Peter Bodo is saying is what many of us have been saying - his mono and his back pain are clever excuses for losing.

Wow Bodo is asking all the questions that I was asking and I got bashed to no end for it. Let's see if people are more willing to take the rap from Bodo. Example: "how realistic is it for him at age 27... to expect to be in perfect physical health (which of the top players is?) at every event he plays?". Exactly my point in the 100% comment thread, thank you Bodo, maybe you won't get crucified like me for making a simple common sense point. He also has the same doubts about the back injury as I expressed before for exactly the same reasons and nobody can accuse Bodo of NOT being a Federer admirer!

Have you read the previous post No.25? If your reading here is so selective. I'll remind you what provoked my joke and was included into it:

Roger: "So Andy, what's the secret to kicking that pesky ***-picker Nadal's butt?"
Andy: "Ahhh.....I can tell ya but then I'll have to kill ya."

In your valuable opinion abusing Nadal is good taste, abusing Federer is bad taste. Check your "taste and functional brain" for double standards.
