have been thinking of trying a thicker guage multi compared to the poly for added durability.. has anyone tried this?

Yeah I use big ace mains 17g and gamma tnt crosses 16g it seems to work out for me

Some hybrid sets are sold like that. It works.

It works... but somehow I like it with lower tension on the thicker gauge cross...

Almost all pre-packaged hybrids have different gauges. Gamma Zo Pro has a 16Lg poly main and a 16g syn gut for the crosses. Prince has a pre-packaged hybrid called Syn Gut Poly Blend that does the exact same thing.
I've used 16g multi in the mains and 17g multi in the crosses for a *little* extra durability. I like it!

is it recommended to only have a variance of 1 guage between strings? ie. 17 poly, 16 multi, not 18 poly 16 multi?
does it matter? does it drastically change the way it plays?
I havent tried any of this, so just throwing it out there

I have on quite a few occasions. 17poly with 16crosses at times.

I actually thought I was using 17G on my crosses, but when I took a closer look at the name on my string it said 16G. I don't plan on changing anytime soon, since I love the way my setup plays. Check my sig for details.

I use 17 on my mains and 16 on my crosses. Love it.

THis is in fact my regular setup. I use 17g redcode mains with 16g spiral flex crosses. Sometimes substitute cyber blue or PHT mains however always in 17g.

Sure, lots of people do this. Right now I have a racquet with poly 18L gauge (1.10 mm) mains and 17 gauge (1.22 mm) crosses.

yeah sure,,some sets are sold like that...go for it i say
Yep. 17 poly mains with 16 syn crosses. A thinner syn would probably pop before the poly was done.

i used to use 19 gauge polyfibre tcs in the mains w/ 17 gauge gosen og sheep micro in the crosses. never any problems. i dont see how different gauges would cause a problem.
