I'm going on a school trip to New York in the upcoming week and I want to know how the weather is. Being in Texas, its fluctuates between 70-90 degrees. Normally I can wear a thin jacket and be extremely warm in 60 degree weather.

Basically, what should I wear?
My mom wants to blow some cash for a coat that will be used for like 4 days.
I was thinking about an undershirt with a longsleeved shirt over, then a sweater and my tennis hoodie which is rather thin but isn't 4 layers enough? Also I will be wearing thick socks, a beanie, and possibly gloves and maybe a scarf. Will this work or is busting the wallet for a coat worth it?

thats fine.

I disagree, you will want the coat because you won't be used to the wind. While uni may think you'll be fine, and while I would also be fine, we are used to the extreme cold. Make sure you bring the gloves. I hope you get a nice sunny day and not some frigid snowy one.

It does get very windy some times with the tall buildings, so just be ready and you choose whether you think a jacket is worth it.

Yeah it was but that was only for one day today it's like high twenties or so. A 50 degree day in Feb is very rare.

The forecast for the this coming week is not very nice. Temps will range from 27 to 38deg as the highs and windy with snow flurries for Monday and Tuesday. So I would dress warmly for the next few weeks.

Layering is always key esp if you do a lot of walking around. Plus the temp difference between day and night can be dramatic. I guess the good thing is that if you need to get some warmer clothes, a lot of the stores are trying to get rid of their winter inventory.

Forget these lightweights and listen to someone who actually lives in severe cold (sorry but anywhere other than Alaska gets you a laugh). Forget the jacket it's a waste for just a few days. People who live in the cold always tend to layer for the exception of extreme temperatures so unless NY is heading into a deep freeze you'll be fine. Focus on the head as it controls the core temp when in the cold and the hands and feet as they are the first to be damaged. As long as you won't be spending significant time outdoors you'll be fine with layers - the wind is a shock to anyone and you'll want to protect the face but this is unavoidable even with a parka so pack a scarf. You'll have it if you need it. If you are really concerned, buy some thermal underwear.

I just checked the forecast and you'll be fine. It looks like a wee bit of snow, minimal wind and above 0 degree C for the next week.

It's COLD! Right now, it's about 30 degrees. Buy a warm jacket and a hat and gloves.

The weather here vary from week to week even in March. Don't waste money on new coat or expensive jacket. Four layers sound good plus scarf and gloves.

Good luck

It's 16 today in the Prairie State; heard there's snow out east. This is a rougher winter and isn't up yet. But the tulips are starting to come up anyway.

But I don't consider 42 to 28 a drastic change. Aren't there places in the country where the temperature drops at night much more than that?

I was to NYC like 3 weeks ago and daaaaaaaaaaaamn it was cold. I had to use up to 4 layers, being the last a coat. Then, of course, the accessories: gloves, hat and scarf.
i get cold just remembering it.

It's funny to my ears hearing southern folks talking about cold weather. More remarks, please!

All I do when it gets really cold out, say 2 degrees and lower for a few days, I think of Washington at Valley Forge. It pulls you through. At least here in Illinois is doesn't stay that cold for many days at a time (did this winter for a spell) until it bounces up to a much nicer 18 or 19.

Get the coat, or freeze thy cheeks off. Your call. Hit Goodwill - plenty of coats there from crappy Tejano skiiers.

Had a Nor-easter just blow through here this week. In VA, and freezing my ball bearings off.

Right now it's about 24 where I am in CT and the winds are blowing like crazy. Tonight it will be around 13C in NYC. Tell that to the Texan OP that it's not drastic. That'll be a hard sell. It's like selling Snuggies to people in India.

24 degrees to 13 degrees is a "drastic" day-to-night temperature drop?

I went sleigh riding this morning (am in NY). It was cold with a very cold wind and a blinding snow hitting you in yer face--and it was great!

Gimme a big ol' Flexible Flyer with hot-waxed "rails" and some hot chocolate in my Thermos and I'm good to go! Now THIS is what Mondays should be all about....invigorating fun that takes my mind off the melting polar ice caps ... if just for a moment ......

In other words, where you live the temperature drops dramatically at night, and thus you are not prepared for the relatively small temperature variation from day to night that we have here in NY.

Yes ballbuster I drive a 'Tin Lizzy' and listen to Thin Lizzy. ;-)

I betcha a number of garages still have "retained and cared for" Flexibles hanging off a big nail on the wall. Oh and it gets worse: up in the garage loft, other outdoor 'play time' trinkets include a Northern Downhill Toboggan for 'group fun' but with a nod at today, there's also an Airboard SLED ("sled"...is dat better?..btw, that thing flies!). And yes, I've never lost the love of flying down hills in the snow, be it on "sleighs," skies, whatever. And no, while I don't have Sylvester (Sly) Stone sideburns, there IS a nice 'old school' loud clattering rattle whenever the metal rudders of a Flexible Flyer fly across a bumpy patch on packed granular/ice as well as the nice "hissssss" you hear when gliding through powder even though the Flexible Flyer "sleigh" is not really geared for deep powder--can get bogged down.

But enough about the Big Apple. What has your "weather" allowed you to do over there in Roma recently except maybe 'people watch' some....groan..... some bodacious babe....ouch, facia bella!.... with her great Italiano buttissimo sasshaying with 'a wiggle in her walk' next to, e.g., a Bernini fountain at the foot of the Via Veneto? ....hmmmm, now that I think of it, the winding lower part of that road (in the US Embassy vacinity?) would make for a nice little bunny-hill level "sleigh" riding hill; the type you could go on down standing up; holding onto the clothes line ropes fashioned as "steering reins" tied through the rope holes on the outside tips of the crossbeam.....then hitting an unexpected bump...and then getting unceremoniously dumped on my face.....

Hey Texas, played platform tennis last night ("paddle") and it was 16 degrees, but the wind--more importantly--the wind was not too strong so while playing (and given the long points in paddle), it was great weather to play in; comfortable. But if in Manhattan, I'm sure the winds were frosty what with the 'strong drafts' that can come about from sifting between the tall buildings.

max
03-04-2009, 08:32 AM
I agree entirely with the use of the Flexible Flyer. It's safer because you have control over it and can steer. This matters!

I have heard tell of some hills banning their use from fear of fingers flying, being amputated. But I feel a competent sled enthusiast will steer clear of phalanges! And bodies as well.

Paddle tennis in the cold is fabulous. It's warming up here in the ******* and should blow your way east shortly. Me? I'm wondering what color scarves to pick out at the season's end sales.

Sure, that might be one lesson you learned.

Might another lesson be "when seeking advice on what to buy to wear on a trip to a U.S. city, one should listen to people who actually live there instead of Canadians who have no idea what they are talking about?"

Hey, speaking of which, I'm coming to Dallas at the end of the month (seriously.) What should I wear? (Please, no advice from Canadians on this, thanks!)

Interesting comment. If one didn't spend the majority of his time blowing smoke up the collective arses of the posters here, I would suggest you take his advice. But he does, so I won't. Also interesting how one chooses to address me to others yet lacks the kahunas to address me himself. I suppose one is terribly busy dredging up four year old posts to provide proper responses. *yawn*
