im trying to change into a shorter swing to get myself ready quicker for the next ball, but when i shorten my swing on the fh side my elbow aches. is this because im not strong enough or is it that my techniques are wrong?

Let the racket do the work. If your arm is hurting, then you are using the wrong muscles, or trying to force it. Remember, Big muscles trickle down to smaller muscles. Like the Whip. The process starts with the legs . . did you notice how big Michael Chang's legs were..... WOW
Maybe you're trying to accelerate the racket from the new shorter backswing TOO quickly! So you're like jerking the motion, instead of relaxing and letting the racket accelerate thru hand, arm, torso rotation, and leg employment.
Don't THINK it was from the shorter backswing, but more from the forward stroke.
