View Full Version : Greatest display of tennis?

IMO Pete's destruction of Agassi in the 99 wimby final was the greatest display of tennis I've ever seen in a grandslam. No one, not Laver, Fed, Nadal, Borg, Becker, Edberg, Connors could have touched Pete on that day(IMO). Agassi did nothing wrong at all, there was simply nothing he could have done that day to change the result. But, like Pete said that it was the best he's ever played. I've watched a lot tennis and I've yet to see a supreme display of tennis better than what Pete showed us in 99 (against quality opposition). Agree/ disagree?

It's gotta be 2008 Wimbledon final. That said, I didn't have the privilege of watching Pete in his prime.

I think the OP meant purely in dominant fashion--not played equally on both sides. I could be mistaken, though.

Rafa at RG 2008.

Rome 2006 final was his best, imo.

agree partly. if you consider absolute dominance over a certain player, but there where others.

Nadal FO final 2008
Nalbadian Madrid Quarters 2007
Borg Baastad 1978 final
Jimmy connors 1974 USO final
Lendl Barcelona 1981 final
Becker Stutgart indoor 1990 final

just of top of my head...

There also wasn't a whole lot of tennis to watch either. lol. I agree that, that was probably nadal's best display of clay court tennis and not just in the finals, but throughout the whole tournament. I think federer's AO 2007 semifinal against roddick was some of his best tennis.

Nadal's RG 08 performance has to go down as one of the most dominating two week performance by any champion in open era history, at a slam.

And ofcourse the final was just utter ruthless domination.

Yeah, he was playing on fire that day. Best thing Andy did that day/evening was his press conference:

haha, I love that press conference. "Your performance here is better than oncourt."

I can't really contribute to the thread as whitewash matches never stay embedded with me. But you gotta love Andy in the video, he does have a great sense of humour, even though he's cheeky sometimes. I like the utube one where he trips going up to fetch an award and says "there is no cool way to get over that". Lol he's a quick thinker:)

The OP mentioned that Agassi wasn't even playing bad. Making all of you who say the RG 08 was the best completely false since Federer obviously stunk it up.

Edbergs great final against Courier 91 or 92?.. He said " i felt i could never miss even if i had tried..." Love it. That said, i don`t think the 2008 Wimbledon final was that great, exciting yes, but not THAT great tennis IMO...

it wasn't. I know some people will just say that's because fed lost, but imo the AO semifinal between fed and safin was much better in terms of quality tennis and fed lost that one as well. In fact rome 2006 was also a great match, which fed lost as well. The excitement and drama of a match doesn't automatically make a match great.

John Mac's dismantling of Connors in the 1984 Wimbledon final with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, is about as close as one can get to a flawless performance. Connors is known to be someone who never gives up. To beat him by that score is very telling.

Already said but worth repeating - Mac/Connors Wimby 84 or Edberg/Courier US Open are the first two that come to mind when I think of dominating performances.

I do agree with the OP though - the tennis Sampras played against Agassi in 99 is tennis the likes of which I've never seen since.

Fed def. Hewitt at US Open. Hewitt didn't really play badly. Federer just wasn't really missing anything on that day.

There were 2 years where Bjorn Borg was even more dominant in terms of number of games lost.

Federer AO 2007 anyone? Easily the best display of tennis I've ever seen.
