Julien Benneteau........probably better than Seppi......

Edit: I just realize that I started a pretty pointless thread. Sorry.

I think it's a good thread. Better than the "top 10 of all time", "best to never win a major", or Fedal threads. Anyway, my vote goes to Gulbis b/c he has made a couple of fairly deep runs at slams, but I like Isner, Becker, Mahut also.

If you are including women and only singles titles I'll go with Kournikova.

No, just ATP or WTA titles........

I think this is a good thread. Fairly imaginative especially compared to the nonsense that the likes of Nadal-Freak take great pleasure in posting.

I think it's a really tough question to answer.

I think a more interesting discussion might be "Who is the best player to have not won a Masters (or Slam) title?"

That would include discussion about a lot of fascinating players like Ljubicic, Stepanek, Simon who've come very close but haven't been able to snag the big one.

How many times has that been done, "not to win masters" "not to win slam"...

go back to talking about federer and nadal or whatever...

Currently (based on ranking) the best one is Troicki at number 36 with no titles....Seppi is second at number 40 but one could argue that since his best ranking has been #27 (july last year) he can be considered the best one....
next its Bolelli at number 41 and then Gulbis at number 42.....but Im guessing that any player that got to the top 20 without winning any titles would be the winner...has that ever happened???

JediMindTrick

Kournikova for sure.

Henrik Holm was number 17 in the singles rankings without any singles title to his name. He never won an ATP title.

Although 5 doubles tournaments.

Go back to talking about Fed/Nadal? Is that an order? Lol chill out.

I meant having a discussion about players that havn't won Masters nor Slams since if you just consider players who haven't won Masters, you would be considering Thomas Johansson and Albert Costa as well. Anyway, you're probably right - that has also been discussed a bit.

I suspected Costa won a clay Masters. But Tojo? When was that?

Just checked. Tojo won the Canadian Masters in 1999.

Are there many players who have won a Slam but not a Masters?

Considering Masters only started in 1990, I doubt there are.

I don't think Korda won a Masters though he won the prestigious Grand Slam Cup in '93.

Gaudio did not win a Masters either.

I believe Viktor Troicki is currently the highest ranked player with no titles. I think Kournikova is probably the best choice amongst females. For men, although he eventually won titles, Cedric Pioline had to be up there in terms of most career accomplishments prior to winning a title. Finalist at US Open, 2 Wimbledon QF, Final at Monte Carlo, as high as #9 in the world, and overall a runner up 9 times prior to winning an ATP event.

Kafelnikov, he was in quite a few finals but didn't win a masters series.

korda won stuttgart in 97

Wawrinka only has one title to his name, beating djokovic in 2006 in umag.

might be kind of surprising to some.

My #1 candidate yep. Nine finals, zero titles. :(
Hopefully that will change tomorrow, but not counting on it... Nishi appears to be just a bit too much of a tall order.

Of the active players cited at the start of this thread, I note that most of them went on to win titles or improve on their tally (eg. Seppi, Tipsarevic and Wawrinka). Benneteau still stands as the only one mentioned back then who has yet to score.

He is obviously the best currently active player to be without a title. It's really astonishing that a player of his ability never came out on the winning side in any of his 9 ATP finals. Tomorrow will be his 10th. Hopefully he can finally hand this unwanted record to someone else!

No, it isn't meant this way. It is meant which player out of those in the group who never won a title is the best.

Ditto, he will go down in history as the best player without a title for sure if he doesn't ever win one.

Julien should just play the Campbell's Newport tennis hall of fame tournament next year if he wants an atp title. I mean, Rajeev ram won it for goodness sakes. Heard the competition there is like a challenger event pretty much.

Exactly or some weak tournaments like Bucharest or Winston Salem (Rosol won both of these).

Isner and Hewitt play there consistently. But that is a good week to focus. He should also try Stockholm.

Yeah there are a few tournaments indeed like Stockholm, i think about Valencia or Vienna. Benneteau could win these.

If the guy REALLY wants to win a singles title that bad he should just play 250s only next season and stop playing slams and M1000s. If he does well in those, it wouldn't hurt his ranking at all. But players never seem to do this, probably because they're obligated to play those big events or because of the money or they just don't like missing slams.

yeah and Julien, since he won a grand slam in doubles this year (and in front of his home crowd!) I think he's fine, of course he wish he won one of these finals but like he said, winning a grand slam, even in doubles, compensates for all these lost finals.

It's funny how this original thread is over 5+ years old, and all the players mentioned (Wawrinka, Tipsarevic, Seppi, Troicki) have gone on to win various titles, while only one player hasn't won a single one...and that's Benneteau...
