View Full Version : Which Pro does your game style resemble?

I'm just wondering what's everyone's style and how you've arrived at such?!

I feel my game is similar to that of Andy Murray. I've always been playing like that...mostly out of necessity. I couldn't do much vs high balls and fast ones, so I just junk it back with some topspin and keep it deep. Then try to hit for winner and run to the net when I have the chance. I hit pretty much everything to mix it up, even forehand slice. However, my backhand is horrid (so, I slice a lot instead.) If only my backhand is comparable to my forehand as that of Murray's. Working on it...one day :)

I've always feel kinda odd playing like this, but not so much anymore :)
Just like the way I bowled, with 2 hands, ahha. Until recently, found out there's a pro that do the same and actually winning.

So, of course when I see Andy Murray for the first time at Wimbledon, I instantly became a fan.

For me, I would say Bob Bryan...but a right handed version. I didn't say Mike because he has a significantly better backhand than Bob. My game is built around serve, volley and forehand...and I would rather be at the net than anywhere else on the court.

You shouldn't have to compare his volleys to a weekend player's volleys to make his look good. By professional standards, Roddick's volleys are flat out terrible.

But your backhand is a bit better then you give yourself credit for.

But who do I emulate? Think a S&Ving Kuerten and thats where you get me, with a Roscoe Tanner-esque serve.

This dude named Santopadre, I saw him at the qualifiers for US Open one year. He had a really slinky slice backhand and very measured on the forehand side. Nothing spectacular.

I wouldnt say my game resemble's federer because than I would be giving my myself to much credit. I use similar tactics to him though. I have big serve and big forehand, but a average backhand. I always slice or roll my backhand back until I get an opportunity to rip a forehand.

I try to imitate Federer obviously. I have a big forehand (a lot faltter than Fed's however) and a single handed backhand. I tried hitting a 2-handed BH but it just doesn't feel right to me. My serve still needs huge development however. I'm very fast around the court too. I can reach some impossibe shots (by ametures standards of course).

No One Said Santoro??

A "coach" at my club in Karachi plays quite similar to Santoro. He is a right hander though, uses two hands on both sides and often on volleys, serves decent, mainly hits the backhand slice (as opposed to Santoro who hits the forehand slice a lot), hits the forehand topspin but sometimes slices it, hits delicate drop shots off both wings, plays very crafily and has amazing control of the ball. I'm pretty sure if he had the finances back in the 70's, he could have been a professional. He did get to number 2 in Pakistan.

Me, I would love to be able to play like Nalbandian. But my backhand is a lot flatter. I 'd say I 'm a lot like Ferrer (though I 'm lot taller and have a more Murray-like physique). My forehand is very solid, and I can occasionally hit some big shots off it. I have pretty crosscourt angles and hit the inside out fairly well. But it's not a big shot.
I do think my forehand off low mid court balls resembles Federer's - especially the inside out.
My serve is alright, mostly I use it to push my opponent back only occasionally hit big flat ones. My volleys absolutely suck and my slices are nothing to write home about. I can hit ok drops, and my touch around the net is pretty decent. I have good speed and can chase down many balls though I normally like to take balls early and camp out on the baseline.
So in that sense I 'm kind of like Agassi - I also tend to run opponents ragged.

As for me, Safina.

Iffy serve, over-dependent on backhand, forehand that's unpredictable (both good and bad). Gets angry, can toss racquets, and sometimes not having fun. I just don't do the "come-ons" but I do grunt.

I hit lots of aces like Roddick to get the points over with quickly. I'll go for my forehand like Gonzalez to get the point over quickly. I'll whack the backhand like Blake to get the point over with quickly. I'll chip and charge like Annacone to get the point over quickly. I'll hit drop shots and dinks like Murray to get the point over quickly. If I don't know what to do I'll make up a new shot on the fly to... you know what comes next.

:-)

Actually, I really don't have a game, just a collection of shots. I never claimed I could help anyone with match play or the mental side of tennis. I do know how to hit every shot in the book and more. There is no pro player who really doesn't have a game.

My baseline strokes are similar to John Mcenroeís. I was told multiple times. A few easy volleys here and there, no antics, I played just for fun. Iíve not tried to emulate him but figured out that this was the best style for me after trying different things, I am definitely not a baseline basher nor I have the mentality of a grinder. Basically I take the ball quite early in the rise, trying to take the center of the court, cutting the trajectories and pushing the ball in the corners, it requires speed, anticipation and accuracy, not a power game. When in the zone, itís very nice to play like that. When Iím off it is quite ugly. I was better at track and fields, was a good sprinter, jumper. Iím not a very good tennis player, I never took lessons but was able to annoy players with textbook strokes and no feel for the game or lesser athletic abilities. With time my pleasure was to improve mentally, in terms of focus, thinking the shots, my game became more complete also, I was able to mix a bit more, still a recreational player.

Not too many 1 handers to choose from these days, so I'd have to say my game is closest to Federer. I prefer to come over my backhand, but will mix in the slice too. I also seem to have the ability to frame balls 100 feet in the air like him too. :)

I have the grace of Sjeng Shalken's serve, the consistency of F. Lopez's backhand, the variety and pace on the forehand of a Greg Rusedski, the movement of Ivo Karlovich, the mental tenacity and temperment of Safin, the returning prowess of Oliver Rochus.

See, I'm just like the pros.

Normally, something in between hewitt, and djokovic,(i'm not as athletic as djokovic though), when I'm on, more like nalbandian which what I always try to play like anyway, that contra tennis you know. It's not easy, you need a clear mind.

Solid backhand
Good forehand with variety but can falter(can hit lots of spin)
Solid serve
Volleys need work, but drop volley keeps me alive
Return consistenly, but can crack it every once in awhile

But like the two out of three players above, I'm trying to figure out how to perform consistently.

I feel like when I'm on my game resembles something like Djokovic or Federer with a two handed backhand, obviously not as good. I try to mix up my use of spins and I like to go for those angles. Forehand, backhand and serve are all on the same level. My volleys are an exception, average at best. About 5 years ago I would say almost like Roddick, (I hit the fastest and flattest serves of my life) with a great backhand instead of forehand, other parts of my game were non-existent. I pretty much started modeling my forehand after Federer. When I'm off, I start looking like Blake.
